Scope of Position:

The Research Scientist will use various modeling and simulations techniques to advance our fundamental understanding of Corning products and manufacturing processes. The position will require an understanding of computational models and underlying transport mechanisms used to solve a variety of fluid flow and transport problems. Specific areas include viscous fluid flow modeling, fluid-structure interaction, heat and mass transport and related areas. The selected candidate will work with a dynamic team using commercial software tools such as Comsol, ANSYS Fluent, etc. The selected candidate may get involved in developing own code to solve problems and would require expertise in of one of the following coding languages C++, Python, Fortran, etc. These tools will be used to solve physics-based problems related to Corning manufacturing processes and Corning products performance in field.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

1. Break down technical product and process challenges into tractable models and simulations to identify potential problems, define suitable operating conditions, and optimize designs.

2. Propose and develop measurement techniques to obtain the necessary information to accurately model the system of interest.

3. Validate the model results with experimental or manufacturing results by working with experimentalists.

4. Attend project meetings, provide modeling updates and interpret results to address real-world problems.

5. Document critical results in technical reports and patents.

 

Travel requirements (please note if international):

Expected travel time <10% (domestic)

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime: 40 hours per week but some flexibility is required

 

Education and Experience:

PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field Skills:

1. Experience and in-depth knowledge of viscous fluid flow, fluid structure interaction, heat and mass transport.

2. Experience in computational techniques for solving various PDEs.

3. Experience in code development and simulation analysis (e.g. MATLAB, Python, Fortran, C/C++).

 

Desired Skills:

1. Problem solving skills including developing and testing hypotheses on product or process related issues.

2. Knowledge of numerical simulation software such as ANSYS, COMSOL and open-source code such as OpenFOAM.

3. Knowledge of high-performance computing and large-scale data analysis.

4. A strong record of peer-reviewed journal publications.

 

Soft Skills:

1. Must be self-motivated and demonstrate strong curiosity of the technical work.

2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

3. Respect others and be willing to work across diverse cultures.

4. Able to work both independently and with a team.
