Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in materials science. For more than 160 years, Corning has applied its unparalleled expertise in specialty glass, ceramics, and optical physics to develop products that have created new industries and transformed people’s lives.

At Corning, our growth is fueled by a commitment to innovation. We succeed through sustained investment in research & development, a unique combination of material and process innovation, and close collaboration with customers to solve tough technology challenges. We are a four-time National Medal of Technology winner thanks to our technology leadership and R&D environment, which attract and enable the best scientific minds in the world. This pipeline of talent has brought life-changing innovation to your fingertips for more than 160 years.

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

Research scientist in the magnetic spectroscopy group, with emphasis on routine and non-routine characterization of Corning materials. Project and product support based on leveraging our problem solving and fundamental understanding of materials where NMR and EPR spectroscopies are preferred methods. Solid-state NMR, liquid NMR, and EPR experiments are done in partnership with many different R&D groups at Corning.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine and non-routine NMR and EPR analyses of materials in support of research, development, and manufacturing priorities. Methods currently include liquid NMR of organic compounds, X-band EPR spectroscopy, and solid-state NMR of inorganic glasses, ceramics, and polymers.

• Actively collaborate with R&D scientists and other characterization experts to advance our understanding of materials and processes. Analyze data, generate written reports, and seek opportunities to publish and present in journals and scientific meetings.

• Maintain laboratory operations and perform regular cryogen fills for several wide-bore and narrow-bore magnets.

• Proactively identify opportunities for improvement in operation, sample and data management, and safety. Lead efforts to add critical new capabilities to the group.

• Manage vendors and related on-site maintenance.

Qualifications

• PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or closely related field, with a minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience with NMR spectroscopy, including at least some of the following:

o Experience with solid-state NMR of inorganic solids

o Working knowledge of EPR spectroscopy

o Understanding of organic chemistry and structural elucidation

o Familiarity with NMR hardware and software, data processing, and analysis

o Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to work on multiple, diverse projects

Travel requirements (please note if international): Travel is only required when attending and presenting at scientific conferences. Most opportunities will not involve international travel. Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Flexible schedule but required to be physically present during core hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some weekends and holidays may require a few working hours to address magnet maintenance.

Desired Skills (these are the skills that would be nice for candidates to possess):

Basic understanding of solid-state NMR; expertise in organic or polymer chemistry.

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership):

Excellent oral and written communication skills; track record of scientific publication and conference presentations
