Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): This is a research position focused on functional and decorative printing on glass and ceramics to manipulate optical, mechanical, wetting and/or haptic properties. The responsibilities of this position include participating in and leading various R&D projects, both fundamental and applied. The responsibilities also include maintenance and operation of ink jet printers, print heads, droplet imaging equipment, and a screen printer. The candidate should have deep, fundamental understanding of functional and decorative printing by various methods including but not limited to drop-on-demand and continuous ink jet printing in addition to screen printing. The candidate should also be familiar with both rigid and flexible substrates as well as glass and ceramic substrates. This position requires a detailed understanding of surface science including surface chemistry, surface topography, ink interaction with surfaces, and extensive practical knowledge of experimental design and characterization techniques. Other expectations for this role include contributing to new product development, building internal and external professional networks, writing technical reports and contributing to intellectual property.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Act as a technical expert in functional and decorative printing

• Maintain and operate ink jet printers, print heads, droplet imaging equipment and a screen printer

• Identify and establish printing techniques on glass like gravure and flexo printing

• Provide technical leadership to solve fundamental problems including working across organizations to leverage interdisciplinary approaches when appropriate

• Identify and articulate problems as well as develop and execute approaches to solving them

• Identify capability gaps and work to address through methods development, capital acquisition and/or through external collaborations

• Function as a team member or team leader on R&D projects

• Make technical presentations to project teams and management

• Provide technical guidance to support staff

• Author invention disclosures, internal reports, and refereed external publications


Travel requirements (please note if international): 3 - 4 weeks/yr for conferences, customer meetings, plant and lab visits – some international

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hrs/week


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration): Ph.D. in an Engineering discipline or related field is required. Post-graduate industrial, academic, or national laboratory research experience in a printing-related role is desired.
