Scope of Position:

The Research Scientist is responsible for extending our capabilities around molecular scale simulation of glass, polymers, and ceramics.  The candidate must have an in-depth knowledge of molecular modeling with expertise in the density functional tight-binding method and molecular dynamics simulation including extracting physical properties from simulation results. This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively across multiple organizations in Research, Development, Engineering and Manufacturing.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

1. Implement cutting edge simulation methodologies that enable us to simulate a broad range of compositions characterizing bulk properties, surface phenomena, and the interaction of various types of materials.

2. Propose and conduct simulation work that directly addresses technical challenges in product performance and product manufacturability.

3. Validate simulation results with experimental data by working alongside experimentalists.

4. Attend project meetings, provide modeling updates and interpret results to address real-world problems.

5. Document critical results in technical reports and patents.

 

Travel requirements (please note if international): Expected travel time <10% (domestic)

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime: 40 hours per week but some flexibility is required

 

Education and Experience: PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field

 

Required Skills:

1. Experience and in-depth knowledge of the density functional tight-binding method.

2. Experience in molecular-scale modeling and simulation techniques.

3. Experience in code development, simulation analysis, automation of simulation campaigns, and force field development.

 

Desired Skills:

1. Problem solving skills including developing and testing hypotheses on product or process related issues.

2. Experience with common numerical simulation software such as VASP and LAMMPS.

3. Knowledge of high-performance computing and large-scale data analysis.

4. Familiarity with machine learning and its application in materials modeling.

5. A strong record of peer-reviewed journal publications.

 

Soft Skills:

1. Must be self-motivated and demonstrate strong curiosity of the technical work.

2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

3. Respect others and be willing to work across diverse cultures.

4. Able to work both independently and with a team.
