Purpose of the Position:

As a Research Scientist, you will work with teams of modelers and experimentalists towards improving materials understanding as it applies to process and product development in multiple business areas. From an initial problem statement, you will identify the critical information required to solve the problem and design and execute the necessary models and simulations. This can be related to improving product performance, improving process efficiency, new material development, and technical support for customers. Your core focus area will be molecular dynamics simulation of polymers with opportunities to expand into coarse-grained MD, density functional theory, machine learning, and other techniques as they suit the problem requirements. This work requires effective communication across scientific disciplines, dedicated focus, and independent learning to deliver the needed insight.  This position provides exposure to a broad range of technical challenges, a collaborative environment with many top scientists, and an opportunity to grow both technically and professionally.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Work with experimentalists and development to identify what simulations need to be done.
  • Create and execute simulations of Corning materials, products, and processes.
  • Analyze results, document, and communicate the relevant information.
  • Communicate the project status and updates with the team and to management, including memos, technical reports, and verbal presentations.

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related major with emphasis on modeling.
  • Experience with molecular dynamics software packages including LAMMPS
  • Experience with polymer physics and chemistry as it pertains to molecular dynamics simulations
  • Experience working independently to define problems and achieve objectives.

  • Familiarity with high-performance computing and scripting.
  • Competency in at least one programming language.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of scientific disciplines such as fluid flow, chemical reactions, structural mechanics, heat transfer, electricity & magnetism, and optics.

  • Motivated self-starter with an independent learning style.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Technically curious and goal oriented. This position provides exposure to a broad range of technical challenges, a collaborative environment with many top scientists, and an opportunity to grow both technically and professionally.
