Scope of Position:

• Apply expertise and innovation in the polymer science and engineering to support all of Corning’s businesses, including Mobile Consumer Electronics, Optical Communications, Life Sciences, and Automotive.

• Conduct exploratory research in polymer plastic, polymer composites, and polymer/glass/ceramic interface.

• Demonstrate technical leadership in the area of materials science and polymer engineering, in particular injection molding, through rigorous mechanistic problem-solving approaches.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Accountable for all aspects of lab safety and adherence to Corning Values

• Support development of new products and drive the development processes for plastic forming processes (primarily injection molding) and secondary processes

• Conduct research, propose experiments, and analyze data to test hypotheses to enhance understanding of products and processes and to provide Corning with inventive solutions toward new development efforts.

• Collaborate with project teams across research, development and manufacturing functions, providing polymer materials fundamental understanding and processing support for short and long-term R&D efforts.

• Balance hands-on work-related activities with technical leadership related activities

 

Travel requirements (please note if international): up to 10% in USA

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours / week ; 8 am – 5 PM / flex time as needed

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

M.S or Ph.D. in Polymer/Material Science and Engineering with focus on plastic injection molding Industrial experience is preferred

 

Required Skills:

• Personal dedication to continuous improvement in lab safety

• Proficient in injection molding process development including the use of scientific injection molding

• Relevant experience in molding product development or product testing

• Ability to work in a collaborative manner in a multi-disciplinary team environment

• Demonstrated ability to solve difficult technical problems and deliver practical solutions that meet the application requirements along with the fundamental understanding of the polymer properties that drives the performance

 

Desired Skills:

• Experience with design of plastic parts for injection molding and development of injection molding process

• Working knowledge of Injection mold design, SolidWorks, FEA, and mold flow analysis

• Knowledge/experience in polymer science, understanding of polymer structure-property relationships and polymer physics

• Ability to formulate testing protocols for desired material properties, starting with basic analytic capabilities (FTIR, TGA, DSC, …)
