Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Responsible for creating and using mathematical models applying first principles understanding or using existing models to develop stress, deformation and life analysis related to existing platforms of glass melting and forming processes, or new melting and forming systems and platform designs, and process troubleshooting and analysis to produce step-change improvements in product quality and manufacturing performance and developing new products.


Duties include: modeling and simulating stress and deformation analysis related to platforms using glass melting and forming processes, leading process technology development in a manufacturing environment and delivering new technology to the engineering organization, acting as a glass process expert to bridge the gap between process experimentation and fundamental scientific principles; performing numerical simulations using in-house coding and Finite Element Analysis software, simplifying, and improving our mathematical modeling tools to result in widespread usage, using graphical user interface macros and programming routines to increase the relevancy of data; validating mathematical modeling results with design of experiments in pilot runs and manufacturing processes; and documenting results in technical reports and invention disclosures.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Performing numerical simulations using in-house coding and Finite Element Analysis software for designing new manufacturing processes and equipment, or for trouble-shooting existing process upsets.

• Develop new models or help other engineers develop models if the existing models are insufficient.

• Apply physical principles to explain data and identify gaps for improving quality or reducing cost. Generate hypothesis to explain the existing gaps in knowledge. Use models or physical tests to confirm or deny hypothesis

• Collaborate with subject matter experts, division engineers and scientists to facilitate and collect data from plants to develop, calibrate and validate math models


Travel Requirements (please note if international):

Requires up to 10% domestic and international travel (Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, China). Hours of work/work schedule/flextime: 40 hours a week full time position. Flextime allowed considering meetings in Asia and Europe


Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

1. Strong analytical skills for problem solving

2. Familiar with computational techniques, used in stress analysis, fracture mechanics, fatigue analysis, damage accumulation, creep, residual stresses, computational deformation applications and/or finite element analysis for structures, stability analysis of structures, transient response of structures to time-dependent loads

3. Familiar with problems related to flow-structure coupling, thermal stress-deformation coupling

4. Having a background in tackling complicated problems, defining the underlying physics using fundamental principles and simplifying the problem as much as needed, identifying solution paths, developing solution techniques, and delivering following timeliness


Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

1. Familiarity with commercial software such as ANSYS or ABAQUS, Matlab, Comsol, AUTO CAD, Solid Works, Design Modeler, Gambit/Cubit

2. Familiarity with Linux, C++, Python

3. Familiarity with viscoelastic and plastic phenomena, model that have viscoelasticity and plasticity and constitutive modeling

4. Confidence in dissecting numerical codes, developing scripts and contributing to in-house code development

5. Confidence in large data management to applying in-depth data analysis and statistical tools to the design of experiments and the interpretation of result, and defect identification and categorization

6. Familiarity with fluid dynamics and heat transfer problems

7. Experience with designing experiments or interacting with experimentalists needed for model validation or development related top stress and deformation related models


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Geophysics, Computational Science, or Physics OR Masters in above with 3-5 years of experience
