Corning Incorporated is seeking a Senior Development Scientist – Glass Melting Process to join our Glass Melting team at our Sullivan Park R&D center in Corning, NY. This is an onsite role, Monday–Friday, 40-hour week with flexibility as needed, with up to 25% travel to Corning locations. Relocation assistance is available.
Melting glass in the lab is only the beginning. In this role, you will develop melting processes that are consistent, controlled, and ready for pilot or manufacturing for new glass compositions. This could be a strong fit if you have hands-on glass melting experience, or ceramics, metals, or other high-temperature (1000°C+) experience, and have taken a process from lab toward scale-up.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, run, and analyze melting and process experiments, then define the next steps
- Turn lab-scale melts into repeatable processes that deliver consistent samples
- Define what a manufacturing platform needs: what to measure and control
- Transfer processes to pilot line or manufacturing, ensuring technical and operational readiness
- Build analytical tools and techniques that make processes robust and optimized
- Partner with research, modeling, characterization, and equipment design experts, using modeling outputs to guide experiments
- Communicate findings and risks to stakeholders while managing multiple programs
Minimum Qualifications and Skills
- PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Geology, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant R&D experience; or MS with 10+ years
- Hands-on experience melting or processing materials above 1000°C (glass, ceramics, or metals)
- Experience taking a process from concept through scale-up, trials, or transfer to pilot or manufacturing
- Working knowledge of heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, reaction kinetics, and thermodynamics, and how they link material properties to process and product performance
- Ability to interpret process-modeling outputs to guide experiments (model building not required)
- Clear communication and the ability to work independently across interdisciplinary teams
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Direct glass melting experience, including equipment and quality measurements
- Industry development, pilot-line, or manufacturing experience
- Experience partnering with equipment designers to specify or build process equipment
