Scope of position:

Corning Emerging Innovation Group (EIG) is working to build profitable new growth businesses from innovations in glass, ceramics, and other materials.  EIG Technology department is looking for a technician to join its project teams. You will work alongside scientists and engineers on reliability testing, sample making, lamination and experimental plan executions.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work with scientists/engineer to develop experiment plans
  • Execute experimental plans. Interface with other groups (e.g. characterization, mechanical services…) to complete the plan
  • Report out on observations and test data and interpret the test results
  • Conduct data compilation, analysis, and documentation using reliability software (Excel, Minitab, and/or JMP)
  • Present results, conclusions and recommendations to project teams.
  • Record and organize materials, samples, data and documents
  • Optimize and/or maintain tools and equipment in accordance with the needs of process development and testing; work with the team and vendor to maintain adequate parts, fixtures, and equipment
  • Utilize manual dexterity to prepare and/or build specimens for testing using proper glass/specimen handling
  • Track/log materials, samples, experimental procedures, data and documents
  • Utilize internal request systems to order glass, request tests, and facilitate sample processing
  • Maintain lab and equipment safe, clean and organized

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or related discipline OR Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or related discipline AND 4 years of relevant experience
  • Exposure to general materials mechanic concepts including stress/strain behavior, fracture mechanics, etc.
  • Mechanical design skills
  • Experience with observation, experimentation and data analysis
  • Capability to perform software simulations with existing tools
  • Mechanical aptitude in working with small powered and/or non-powered hand tools for fixture building
  • Computer and data analysis/archiving skills, including familiarity with programs such as Microsoft Office, web-based work request systems, etc.
  • Ability to maintain an accurate and thorough record of activities performed, including via a laboratory notebook  
  • Capability for troubleshooting
  • Capability to clearly and accurately communicating results (verbal and written)

 

Desired Skills:

  • Proficient in Excel and statistical software
  • Familiarity with and/or experience in conducting strain gauging, digital image correlation and/or other contact or non-contact stress analysis techniques
  • Knowledge in reliability engineering
  • Experience in product development
  • Experience in material science and engineering

The range for this position is $74,801.00 - $102,852.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
