Role Purpose

You will develop and implement measurement systems that use optical metrology and machine vision for product inspection, quality control, and manufacturing operations. You will work independently on moderately complex tasks, may manage a workstream or provide technical supervision within a laboratory or sub-team, and will collaborate across your work group and with other functions to define requirements and deploy solutions. You may suggest enabling technologies that can be leveraged more broadly across the Technology Community.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test measurement systems incorporating optical metrology and machine vision techniques, working independently on moderately complex tasks.
• Develop and implement image processing and machine learning algorithms for feature extraction, classification, and metrology.
• Diagnose and solve moderate technical problems with little or no guidance, and estimate risks to guide next-step decisions.
• Manage a project workstream or process, or provide technical supervision within a laboratory or sub-team, as assigned.
• Collaborate across functions (Development, Quality, IT, Operations) to define requirements and deploy systems into manufacturing workflows.
• Suggest enabling technologies that can be leveraged across the Technology Community to improve products or processes.
• Support the transfer of technology from development toward production-ready solutions.
• Create and maintain documentation, and author formal reports, living reference documents, or intellectual property filings.

Experiences/Education - Required

• MS required or PhD in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.
• MS with ~2-6 years, or a PhD with 0-3 years of relevant experience
• Hands-on experience with optical systems, imaging hardware, and measurement instruments.
• Strong programming skills in Python and/or C# for algorithm development, data manipulation, and system integration.
• Solid knowledge of machine vision algorithms (blob analysis, edge detection, morphology, feature extraction, classification, etc.).
• Experience with machine learning techniques, including training CNNs and using traditional methods.
• Data retrieval, plotting, and analysis using tools like Excel, MATLAB, or Python.
• Familiarity with software development tools such as Halcon, OpenCV, or LabVIEW.
• Ability to work independently and provide technical guidance within a team.
• Strong communication and presentation skills (MS Office programs).
• Up to 10-30% domestic and international travel may be required, with trips ranging from one day to several weeks.

Experiences/Education - Desired

• Experience with optical metrology techniques, including 3D measurement, structured light, lasers, and physical optics.
• Experience with motion control systems and imaging platforms.
• Knowledge of statistical analysis and process improvement methodologies (e.g., design of experiments).
• Familiarity with database management and high-performance computing systems.
• Experience supporting manufacturing operations with metrology and inspection systems.

The range for this position is $95,386.00 - $131,156.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
