Scope of Position: The Senior Manager of Crisis Communications and Issues Management will be responsible for driving a communications strategy that advances and protects Corning’s reputation. As a key member of the Corporate Communications team reporting to the Director of External Affairs, the qualified candidate will work closely with Corning’s media relations, social media, crisis communications response team, business continuity leaders, and senior executives to provide proactive recommendations and real-time responses. They will play an active role in developing issues-management programs and crisis preparedness activities that support business operations and reputation objectives. This experienced leader will manage a team and help communicate complex subject matter through the lens of risk mitigation. They will have exceptional judgement, strong media relations capabilities, and a deep understanding of the dynamic public affairs landscape. The ideal candidate must be comfortable with changing priorities and willing to respond outside of regular work hours to manage breaking issues. They will proactively seek to identify new approaches to reputation management and explore new opportunities across traditional and digital media to engage stakeholders to ensure Corning’s story is clear and accurate. They will evolve and maintain the company’s crisis communications playbook while ensuring the team is well-prepared for future challenges. They will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including legal, HR, global security, government affairs, and other departments.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Partner with the External Affairs Director to develop proactive and reactive crisis communications strategies and provide internal and external recommendations

• Proactively identify new approaches to reputation management in collaboration with Brand and Experience team and position themselves as a leader in the field who is sought for senior counsel

• Craft risk/vulnerability assessments and points of view on how and when to respond to a crisis or issue scenario

• Oversee monitoring and analysis of traditional media channels for potential threats or developments

• Quickly craft effective communications materials that deliver clear, consistent, and compelling messages to ensure Corning’s position is accurate, especially in times of crisis to avoid misinformation

• Develop and support tabletop exercises with Global Security and Business Continuity teams to make sure the team is well-prepared for different scenario planning

• Work closely with business leaders and regional teams to provide proactive scenario planning and strategic support in real-time as issues may arise

• Manage direct report(s) and lead strategic or complex projects across multiple teams and/or departments and measure success based on defined outcomes

• Stay up to date on relevant industry insights with a finger on the pulse of stakeholder groups and coalitions, and trends in the corporate and public affairs space

• Advise executives on significant issues, stakeholder concerns, and actions that may impact the company

• Deploy and streamline standards and best practices for crisis communications and issues management across the enterprise

• Act as point of escalation for reputational risks, issues, and obstacles, ensuring action items are clearly defined, assigned to owners, and driven to resolution in timely manner


Required Skills and Experience:

• 10+ years of experience in any of the following: communications, journalism, media relations, public affairs, issue advocacy, and/or reptation management

• Leadership experience in stakeholder engagement, managing contentious issues, advising on corporate affairs, and tracking industry-wide trends • Self-starter with a track record of leading new initiatives in a matrixed organization with cross-functional teams while working effectively at all levels of the organization

• Ability to proactively build coalitions, influence, credibility, and trust while driving outcomes and holding others accountable

• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to quickly assess situations, identify gaps, and provide potential solutions

• Strategic thinker who can stay on top of tactical execution, exercises exceptional judgment, and operate independently

• Capacity to work well under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to fast-paced environment with changing requirements

• Exceptional written and verbal communications skills

• Attention to detail and strong editing skills

• Superior research and analytical skills


Desired Qualifications:

• Prior experience in strategic external communications, media relations activities, crisis and litigation communications and/or public affairs a definite plus

• Expertise in traditional and digital media to drive external communications strategy with flawless execution

• Combination of agency, government, and/or corporate communications experience


Travel Requirements: • Up to 25% travel to Corning NY and other locations as needed Hours of work/work schedule/flextime: • Monday – Friday • Must be willing to respond outside of regular work hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed

• Ability to work flexible schedules to accommodate different global time zones


Required Education: • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related fields required • Master’s degree preferred
