The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Scope of Position:

  • The ideal candidate for this position will possess demonstrated engineering design capabilities and practical knowledge with respect to glass melting and delivery equipment.
  • The Gorilla Glass business develops new glass compositions to address our Customer’s requirements and requires continual evaluation and improvement of the melting process design to deliver improved performance and campaign life.
  • The successful candidate must be capable of working closely with a diverse functional team of technicians, engineers and scientists to understand technical challenges and develop equipment designs in order to solve those challenges.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Provide melting equipment design and development leadership through the application of sound engineering principles to the design and implementation of glass melting and forming process equipment.
  • Application of engineering principles primarily in the fields of mechanical design, heat transfer, material science and fluid mechanics will be utilized on a near daily basis.
  • Use of numerical, physical modeling and demonstrated practical application of model results to equipment design.
  • Develop close working relationships with CAD technicians to collaboratively develop concepts into functional designs.
  • Work closely with and mentor junior engineers in the develop of their skills and knowledge, enabling them to make sound design and process development contributions with an eye on future business growth.
  • Collaboration with scientists and process specialists as part of the engineering design process.
  • Collaboration with manufacturing operations to define and receive new and modified process equipment.
  • Positive engagement with process operation engineers and operations personnel to observe and define incremental equipment improvements.
  • Equipment installation supervision and on-site commissioning as needed.

Travel:

  • We anticipate up to 25% travel for this role, both domestic and internationally. Travel is required to Corning’s worldwide operations. Frequency and duration vary according to project stage and status. Travel may include project meetings, equipment installation, and commissioning.

Hours:

  • 8 am – 5 pm with ability to support off-hours conference calls / meetings with international project teams and extended hours as required to meet project objectives

Education & Experience:

  • We require a MS in Mechanical, Material Science, Civil, or Chemical Engineering. Chemical may be considered; PhD in Mechanical, Material Science, Civil, or Chemical Engineering as preferred
  • We are seeking 10-15 years of experience in design and analysis of complex, high temperature mechanical systems
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design, heat transfer, material science and fluid mechanics.
  • Willingness to perform practical engagement in both research and manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of modeling for flow, thermal, and structural analysis.
  • Results oriented; delivery of tasks to project schedules.
  • Communicate and work in a global environment; across research, development, engineering, commercial, and operations worldwide.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development of fundamental understanding for new products and processes.
  • Effectively act as technical member of a larger project team.

Soft Skills:

  • Demonstrated thermal and fluid mathematical modeling competency
  • Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, COMSOL and other relevant mechanical design software packages.
  • Experience in the start-up and operation of glass melting processes in manufacturing
  • Possesses, or ability to develop, strong network with Corning global technical community and key external suppliers / partners.
