Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): This is a research position focused on surface modifications to manipulate optical, mechanical, wetting, adhesion, electrical, and/or haptic properties. The candidate should have experience with organic/inorganic coatings on substrates such as glass, polymers, and ceramics and should understand fundamentals of film drying/curing, coating-substrate interfacial phenomena, and adhesion. The candidate should be familiar with conventional coating processes including dip-coating, vapor deposition, spin-coating, and spray coating. This position requires a detailed understanding of surface science including surface chemistry, preparation, and functionalization and extensive practical knowledge of experimental design and characterization techniques. The responsibilities of this position include participating in and leading various R&D projects, both fundamental and applied. Other expectations for this role include contributing to new product development, building internal and external professional networks, writing technical reports and contributing to intellectual property.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Act as a technical expert in surface chemistry, surface functionalization, interface phenomena, coating adhesion, and application of coatings to various substrates

• Provide technical leadership to solve fundamental problems including working across organizations to leverage interdisciplinary approaches when appropriate

• Identify and articulate problems as well as develop and execute approaches to solving them

• Identify capability gaps and work to address through methods development, capital acquisition and/or through external collaborations

• Function as a team member or team leader on R&D projects

• Make technical presentations to project teams and management

• Provide technical guidance to support staff

• Author invention disclosures, internal reports, and refereed publications


Travel requirements (please note if international): 3 - 4 weeks/yr for conferences, customer meetings, plant and lab visits – some international

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hrs/week


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field is required. Post-graduate industrial, academic, or national laboratory research experience in a materials-related field is also desired.

Strong surface science understanding including cleanliness best practices Fundamental understanding of interface phenomena, the principles governing coating adhesion, and coating drying/curing effects Knowledge of application of coatings on various substrates including glass, ceramics, and polymers Knowledge of various coating methods including dip-coating, vapor deposition, spin-coating, and spray coating Familiarity with a variety of material characterization techniques and equipment Project management skills Experimental design set-up, execution, and data analysis Strong communication, technical writing, and oral presentational skills
