Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Lead and provide technical support to new glass innovation programs Invent and optimize compositions for new glass and glass-ceramic materials and product applications; Capture associated intellectual property with patent attorneys Collaborate with process research and innovation teams Coordinate with and/or direct laboratory technicians Solve technical problems associated with process innovations or manufacturing operations Provide fundamental understanding of glass structure and property relationships for new product inventions Utilize modeling and characterization tools with colleagues within Glass Research and other organizations across Corning’s technology community

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

Devise experimental plans and execute critical experiments

Review relevant internal and external literature

Document and present experimental and modeling results

Work closely with team members in product and process development organizations

Interface and collaborate with commercial, engineering and manufacturing colleagues

Maintain safe and clean work environment.

 

Travel Requirements (please note if international): Minimal domestic and international travel required

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+, flex-time

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

PhD or MS Degree and 3-5 years of work experience in relevant industry or lab environment

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

1. Background in material science, glass, or geology

2. Technically curious, self-motivated, and able to work independently and in teams

3. Ability to develop and execute experimental plans

4. Knowledge of characterization tools for bulk and surface properties of materials

5. Hands-on technical aptitude

6. Strong communication skills – verbal and written

7. Attention to detail, rigorous execution of work and documentation

8. Able to manage multiple priorities at once

 

Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

1. Experience/background in glass melting and refractory materials

2. Leadership experience

3. Glass forming knowledge

4. Modeling proficiency

5. Knowledge of material mechanical properties and fracture mechanics

6. Optical sciences proficiency

7. Proficiency in chemistry and chemical durability of materials

8. Able to transition materials/products from research through development and beyond
