Scope of Position:

The scope of this position is to participate as a research scientist in small project teams and conduct independent research to support the entire Thin Films and Surfaces Research portfolio, which addresses multiple Corning business divisions. This requires the application of technical expertise in material and surface science within the context of a cutting-edge micro/nano-fabrication facility. Research will be conducted in the areas of advanced glass surface and polymer surface characterization, glass surface modification to provide unique and/or improved surface attributes, glass/metal and/or glass/polymer interfaces as well as effect of glass surface cleaning on subsequent deposition processes.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

This position requires the thoughtful design, efficient execution, and rigorous analysis of experiments within the Thin Film and Surfaces Research clean rooms or lab bench facilities, utilizing the tool sets in the lab, which include glass surface characterization such as zeta potential, inverse gas chromatography, surface FTIR, optical scatterometry. The scientist will collaborate with the Equipment and Process teams to develop new materials and processes and incorporate design changes to process tools. The scientist will initially participate in early stage (I/II) project teams but also support downstream business-critical topics as necessary. The scientist will propose research projects as appropriate.

 

Education and Experience:

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Material Science, Physics, or Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical), or equivalent, with 0 to 5 years of experience. Alternatively, the successful candidate will possess an M.S. in the same fields with a minimum of 3 years of experience.

 

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated capability solving complex materials / process / equipment problems
  • Experience in design, fabrication, and testing of glass surfaces, glass surface modification, glass surface characterization and effect of such on subsequent processes.
  • Strong technical skills in glass processing characterization, glass/polymer and/or glass/ metal interfaces as well as structure-property relationships.
  • Experience in developing research project plans

 

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced training in design of experiments, statistical analysis, and root cause defect analysis
  • Project management competencies
  • Small project team leadership experience

 

Soft Skills:

  • Ability to develop clear and statements of project goals, objectives, and status in written presentations and oral formats.
  • Wide range of interest in material science topics and applications
  • Work well with wide range of personalities in a research environment.

 

 

Travel requirements:  < 15%, primarily domestic. Some international travel possible.

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours per week.
