We are a four-time National Medal of Technology winner thanks to our technology leadership and R&D environment, which attract and enable the best scientific minds in the world. This pipeline of talent has brought life-changing innovation to your fingertips for more than 160 years.

Position Description:

Lead efforts to anticipate and mitigate failure modes of materials, design, and process in product development initiatives. Collaborate with research, development, manufacturing, commercial, and other teams to understand the opportunity, describe solution concepts, and identify failure modes by assessing concept functionality and how well it meets the needs of the opportunity. Define testing to characterize functionality and validate reliability via failure rate calculations/ modeling/ life predictions. Develop insight into root cause and make recommendations to improve performance. Ensure problems are addressed for efficient development of robust products and processes with fewer failure modes and longer life-times.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with technical teams to define customized programs to ensure product meets performance requirements and process delivers the design intent:  a) Understand requirements and potential solution concept(s); b) Develop an understanding of product and material performance under application conditions, and potential effects of the process on the design intent via engineering judgement, testing and/or modeling; c) Identify potential failure modes;  d) Develop and lead an experimental and characterization strategy to produce deeper insight from which root cause can be understood and materials/ design/ process recommendations suggested.
  • Root Cause Analysis/ Problem Solving & Corrective Actions. Interact with technical experts as required for failure analysis, insight and problem solving; explore broad solution space.
  • Creation of Experimental plans (DOE) and execution to generate data for life predictions using accelerated testing methods
  • Statistical data analysis and interpretation
  • Work with colleagues to complete risk assessments and failure rate estimates.
  • Clear communication of plans and updates to appropriate personnel.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours/week, 8am-5pm

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

A Technical Master’s degree is preferred or Bachelor’s with appropriate experience.  Looking for 5 years’ experience in a product/process development type role.

Requirements MUSTS:

  • Understands technology - can lead design assessments and suggests design improvements
  • Statistics/Data Analysis
  • Experimental skills – test methods execution and ability to improve
  • Physics of Failure/ Material property knowledge
  • Familiarity with reliability methods (QFD, FMEA, RCA, FTA, Life predictions, etc.)
  • Results & detail oriented, Rigorous, Self-motivated, Flexible, Multi-tasking, Leadership, Honesty
  • Ability to work successfully across organizations: research, development, manufacturing, commercial
  • Critical thinking/ problem solving with ability to make connections with broad knowledge of materials, physical properties, test methods and failure mechanisms.

  • Broad material/ chemistry/ mechanics/ experience
  • Failure rate predictions/ life models; recommend screens/ demonstration tests.
  • Reliability Engineering
  • Environmental stress testing methodology knowledge (temp, humidity, power, mechanical, vibration, HALT, HASS, etc.)
  • Brittle Material, Glass and Ceramics knowledge
  • Working knowledge of characterization techniques – how to apply and interpret results
  • Evaluation of multi-material system reliability from a systems perspective.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills, ranging from communicating with teams, management to sophisticated outside customers.
  • Strong facilitation and collaboration skills to enable leading of teams through ambiguous evaluations.
  • Eclectic background drawing on a diverse history of knowledge, deep understanding of many materials and multi-material systems and technologies.
