Job description:

  • Chemistry scientist with project management experience. The position requires expertise in chemistry and/or material science/engineering. The ideal candidate would have both a strong record of technical accomplishment, and project management experience. The project management aspect of the role encompasses projects from early research & development phases through pilot manufacturing. In addition to the technical fields noted above, knowledge in chemical and surface measurement and problem solving is a plus.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Subject matter expertise in Chemistry and chemical measurements (theory, experiments & systems) for material & product characterization, material processing including coating and thin films and process innovation. Specifically, the individual needs to identify, evaluate and conduct critical experiments in chemistry, surface and coating areas to solve business critical problems.
  • Improving processes and solving problems based on fundamental understanding gained using the scientific methods
  • Developing cost-competitive and simplified measurement tools that could help understanding the chemistry, coating material, defects, reactivity and readiness of the surface
  • Developing new specialized measurement systems and methods for surfaces and coatings
  • Working with outside vendors for new equipment development
  • Providing process driven input to equipment designs or improvements
  • Provide measurements and results interpretation to the product development team and aide in the setting of product specifications. Manufacturing option exploration, definition and evaluation
  • Assignments may include problem solving in projects related to materials-based products and their applications.

 

Travel requirements

  • Depending on the projects, up to 25%

 

Education and Years of Experience

  • Masters or PHD in Chemistry, or materials science or engineering
  • Minimum 3+ years of Experience in Chemistry or coating related fields with project management experience

 

Required skills

  • State-of-the art experimental/ theoretical and interpretive skills to technical problems
  • Strong technical fundamentals in surface chemistry or materials science and experience in chemical measurements and processes
  • Results oriented and ability to get results quickly
  • Able to collaborate across organizational boundaries and integrate solutions
  • Ability to learn new technology processes quickly

 

Desired skills

 

  • Familiarity with a wide range of analytical, surface analysis, microscopic and spectroscopic techniques
  • Proficient in use of statistical data analysis and DOE in problem solving
  • Organizes, leads, and carries out work on projects of significant scale, complexity or priority
  • Demonstrated ability to define and solve problems, implement solutions to improve products or processes
  • Applying DMAIC and advanced statistical tools is a plus

 

Soft skills

  • Effective presentation and technical writing skills
  • Independently determines and develops approach to solutions
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts
  • Ability to supervise a technician if necessary
