Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

Successful candidate will be responsible for applying first principles knowledge to develop glass compositions for optical communications applications, and, develop and optimize processes making such products to deliver industry-leading optical properties and distinct advantage. The candidate will be a subject matter expert in the area of glass chemistry and processing, where he/she will be directly responsible for the completion of a subset of project objectives. The accountability extends to support other areas of the project to ensure project success. He/she will work in a cross-functional team and is expected to be a strong team player. The candidate will be responsible for communicating the conclusions and recommendations based on the analysis to the team. Candidate is expected to demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving along with good project management skills.   


Day to Day Responsibilities:

(1) Identify new glass-based product opportunities for optical communications, and provide technical expertise to projects in developing processes that increase Corning’s capabilities.

(2) Provide leadership in problem solving through comprehensive fundamental understanding of glass chemistry and optical / mechanical property interactions, advanced technical knowledge, and, empirical and modeling data analysis to develop novel designs and to improve product performance.

(3) Through close collaboration with the broader Research, Development, Commercial and Engineering communities, ensure that process requirements are understood and integrated to meet product requirements and division objectives.

(4) Lead or support industrialization/feasibility trials at the manufacturing plants for scale-up of new / improved products and processes meeting the desired performance requirements.

(5) Prepare process and technology transfer documentation.

(6) Actively file IP and write Internal and External Technical Reports.  


Travel Requirements (please note if international): <10%, primarily in North America  

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Mon-Fri 8a-5p / 40 hrs per week  


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

PhD in Glass Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Geology or other related field plus 3-5 years of relevant experience. Master's Degree in the same fields plus a minimum of 7 years of relevant industrial experience    


Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

(1) Designing and hands-on execution of experiments. Analyzing data and drawing actionable conclusions from them

(2) Solid understanding of glass chemistry-property relationships

(3) Competency in industrial thermal and chemical processes. Experience in managing lab and pilot scale processes

(4) Intimate familiarity with relevant characterization techniques

(5) Systematic problem solving    


Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

Experience formulating glass compositions to achieve a set of target attributes Deep Knowledge of glass raw materials and formulation Familiar with key optical fiber attributes and relevant design and process parameters that influence them  


Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership)

(1) Strong communication skills - Oral and written with strong presentation skills

(2) Ability to work effectively in collaboration with multi-functional teams spanning research to commercial to manufacturing

(3) Ability to translate complex technical objectives into an executable action plan with minimal supervision/guidance.
