Role Purpose

This position is in the Sullivan Park Operations Directorate, within the Laboratory Services Management & Engineering (LSME) Department. The primary function of the department is to provide support for R&D activities by providing professional services in project management, infrastructure engineering, and laboratory space management. This position is responsible for coordination of laboratory infrastructure systems including design oversight, installation, and receivership of new systems, operational monitoring and process control of equipment by leveraging engineering principles, standards, processes and best practices. This is a technical individual contributor position with a focus on safe operation, reliability, and sustainability of laboratory infrastructure support equipment and processes. A key function of this job is customer interfacing, knowledge and understanding of customer’s processes and needs, consulting with multiple customers, maintaining good customer relationships, and providing the customer with the most effective support. The position also requires significant interface with Project Managers, Facility Engineering and Trades to enable laboratory evaluations for process suitability and cost estimates. The expectation is that this position will assist in the planning of customer project requirements and project delivery efficiency improvements.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate and support the department’s safety initiatives
  • Technical liaison for process cooling water systems
  • Technical liaison for bulk gases
  • Technical liaison for laboratory exhaust/HVAC systems, gas cabinets, exhaust end devices including fume hoods, specialty hoods (e.g. canopy), and other end devices which require inspection.
  • Effectively support projects through the entire project life-cycle from initiation to close-out
  • Hands-on system engineer with significant field work and Trades/Customer interface
  • Provide system level maintenance, troubleshooting and corrective action follow up
  • Responsible for directing suppliers, Trades and Process Technicians
  • Off hour support when required (on-call rotation, emergencies)
  • Maintain mechanical system level documentation and functional understanding
  • Assess suitability of infrastructure system for capacity and specific customer requirements
  • Communicate and elevate technical issues and recommendations to functional leadership when appropriate.
  • Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time 8am-5pm Monday-Friday

Experiences/Education - Required

  • BS in Engineering (Mechanical, or relevant discipline),  minimum of 5 years experience
  • Functional understanding and experience with process cooling water systems
  • Functional understanding and experience with bulk/process gases and piping
  • Familiarity with exhaust/HVAC facility/infrastructure equipment operation (e.g. air handlers, exhaust fans, dust collectors, wet scrubbers)
  • Project engineering and team experience
  • Mechanical system testing and commissioning coordination
  • Ability to obtain and analyze data to confirm proper system operation
  • Interpretation of technical documentation (e.g. specifications, schematics, P&ID’s, etc.)
  • Effective written, verbal and presentation communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office i.e. Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint and Project
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD
  • Customer Service/Interaction

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • NYS Building Code Awareness
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • SolidWorks, Revit, NAVIS Works
  • Knowledge of infrastructure and facilities engineering related to laboratory operations
  • Familiarity with building management/control systems

The range for this position is $82,203.00 - $113,030.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
