Scope of Position:

  • This is a technical position where the engineer is expected to apply rigorous scientific method and mechanistic understanding to improve glass melting process capability for new and existing products, including flat consumer display glass, tubular pharmaceutical packaging glass, and other emerging glass products.
  • The work requires ability to work and influence across organizational boundaries. Specifically, collaborating with research and development to identify controlling mechanisms and apply the understanding to develop incremental technology to mitigate and/or optimize existing process systems in manufacturing.


Day to Day Responsibilities include managing team to:

  • Generate hypotheses, design experiments (in both lab and manufacturing environments), and interpret data to identify and understand glass melt defect mechanisms and test solutions.
  • Conduct hands on work in a laboratory, pilot, or manufacturing environment. Note the environment can involve high temperatures and/or dirty environments.
  • Communicate project status and updates at multiple levels within the organization, including project teams, upper management, and the larger technical community, including memos, technical reports, and verbal presentations.
  • Maintain contacts with outside groups, such as consultants, universities, and other professional organizations, to facilitate problem identification and solutions.
  • Generate and protect Corning’s intellectual property
  • Document all results
  • Maintain high quality engineering principles, including extensive use of statistics, structured problem-solving methods such as KT, DoE, and DMAIC six sigma tools
  • Measure and communicate performance against objectives


Travel Requirements:

  • Expected travel is 30%, some international
  • Possibility of occasional higher travel (project specific)


Required Education and Years of Experience:

  • Technical Degree Required (glass, ceramics, materials science or related fields), MS minimum, PhD preferred
  • 5+ years of technical/engineering experience; 10 years preferred


Required Skills:

  • 5 years’ experience in glass melting and process engineering; high degree of technical competence
  • Strong lab and experimental practices; can understand glass defect fundamentals, recognize deviations, and implement routine solutions.
  • Able to collaborate across organizational boundaries and integrate solutions
  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills
  • Results oriented and high level of commitment. Able to work in any stage of innovation and handle risk of failure.
  • Drive to learn new technologies and processes quickly.
  • Ability to assimilate quickly and produce valuable results.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with customers, suppliers, and co-workers.
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to develop emerging talent


Desired Skills:

  • 10 years’ experience in glass melting and process engineering; high degree of technical competence
  • Hot material process, such as melting and forming
  • Knowledge of glass process modeling capability and how to leverage modeling tools
  • Experience with process trouble shooting, especially focused on melting defects and formation mechanisms
  • Experiences and accomplishments spanning from early stage innovation to late stage manufacturing
  • Knowledge of Corning processes and business systems
  • Data analysis and visualization software, such as JMP, MatLab, MindJet, etc.
  • Glass, raw materials, glass technology, process engineering experience
  • Project management and manufacturing experience
  • Familiar with engineering excellence tools, with the ability to facilitate and participate effectively
  • Statistics, data analysis, design of experiments
  • Innovative and creative
  • Strong multi-tasker
  • Business savvy and competence
