Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

(1) Provide deep technical equipment expertise for research & development projects related to thin films by vacuum deposition equipment / processes. Projects can range from early stage, exploratory equipment design and definition to later stage equipment support.

(2) Provide technical expertise related to vacuum deposition equipment at manufacturing locations

(3) Work with equipment vendors to define, specify, qualify and/or troubleshoot equipment issues.

(4) Lead and/or work with internal customer projects and process improvement activities.  

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

(1) Develop and maintain current knowledge of industrial PVD equipment, next generation deposition equipment technologies and processes. Apply that knowledge to develop and maintain programs to support new innovation in product & processes

(2) Collaborates with resources from various disciplines (research, engineering, manufacturing, characterization, analysis, modeling). Work with Process Techs or be hands on (as and when needed) to perform experiments, lab maintenance or production line troubleshooting

(3) Perform technical evaluations to support development and potential research and/or engineering efforts in areas of coatings (vacuum and atmosphere deposition) on glass, glass-ceramics, ceramics and semiconductor substrates

(4) Apply technical understanding of coating process & equipment fundamentals to create practical improvements in product and/or process value drivers

(5) Evaluate equipment for capital projects and cost reduction projects

(6) Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with both internal personnel and vendors

(7) Effective documentation of internal reports, operating procedures, specifications, decision analysis, and changes.

(8) Defines opportunities for intellectual property creation and files invention disclosures and patent applications.

(9) Work with company resources to assure a safe work environment for current and new processes, and compliance to Corning’s environmental policy.  

Travel Requirements (please note if international):

10-30% Domestic and International travel depending on the project  

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours/week  

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration) MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering with industrial experience in the area of thin films  

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

(1) In-depth knowledge of vacuum and atmosphere deposition processes including hands on experience with pilot level processes

(2) Knowledge of common industrial processes and testing protocols for coatings.

(3) Ability to translate early stage customer needs/wants into requirements and equipment test plans

(4) Equipment/Mechanical Process understanding and competencies.

(5) Effective communication and presentation skills to all levels in the organization

(6) Commitment to drive for results with minimal supervision  

 

Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

Machine design, controls and/or programming

Project management skills.

Basics of Manufacturing and Other Analysis Tools (KT) trained Six Sigma: Green or Black Belt trained
