We are seeking a candidate to conduct research and development of new materials and processes for energy, electronics, and environmental applications. The individual will specifically utilize their expertise within a collaborative scientific and engineering environment by developing innovative materials and process solutions to address technical problems. The candidate is expected to be able to work on a project or proposed project directions aimed at solving customers issue through a deep understanding of the customer application challenges. The ability to lead a team of scientists or function as the technical subject matter expert within their field on the projects is required. The candidate is expected to use modeling or collaborate with modeling and characterization scientists to enhance scientific understanding and problem solving. Experience with using material informatics and machine learning in problem solving is of interest. The individual must have a solid and sound technical background in Material Science, Physics, Chemical engineering, Ceramics, or a related field. The applicant is expected to have experiences and knowledge of ceramic processes and other high temperature materials processes. Deep knowledge and experience with energy materials and systems are desirable. Prior professional work experience in their technical discipline or at least several years of postdoctoral research experience is required. Other requirements include attention to details, keen analytical skills, and the ability to work on multiple projects,

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

Collaborate or sometime work independently on technical projects to

• Provide technical guidance

• Coach and mentor younger scientists

• Develop and manage testing plans

• Collaborate with teams on ideation and problem solving

• Conduct experiments to gain fundamental knowledge and address technical challenges

• Perform data analysis and interpretation

• Make recommendations to projects to improve functional performance of materials and processes as appropriate

• Develop new intellectual property

 

Travel Requirements: Variable but expectation is <15%

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours per week w/ flex time

 

Required Education:

At least a Master /Ph.D in Material Science, Physics, Chemical engineering, Ceramics or a related field.

 

Required Years and Area of Experience:

At least 15+ years of experience with a master’s degree; at least 10+ years of experience with a Ph.D.

 

Required Skills:

• Strong technical leadership

• Be creative and innovative

• Technical matter expert in area of materials, ceramics and other non-oxide materials.

• Some modeling experience or knowledge

• Project management

• Industry R&D experience or equivalent (post-doc, etc)

• Hands-on laboratory experience

• Ability to work across organizational boundaries from research to manufacturing

• Strong communication skills and comfortable on technical presentations

• Rigorous execution, and data accuracy

• Able to manage multiple priorities at once

• Strong logistical skills

 

Desired Skills:

• Materials Informatics and Machine Learning experience

• Ability to define DOEs and perform statistical analyses

• Customer facing interactions and experience

• Experience with manufacturing environment is a plus

• 6-Sigma training is a plus
