Role Purpose

The position requires use of thermodynamics modeling and experimentation to provide phase equilibria of multi-component systems.   When coupled with kinetics calculations, these tools will provide solutions to complex problems, e.g. glass reaction with refractory materials and crystallization and growth of crystalline phases within glass.  The skillset will support a variety of businesses and core fundamental glass technology.  The hybrid nature of this role will provide a bridge between the inorganic materials research & development capability group and the modeling & simulation teams.

Key Responsibilities

The day to day responsibilities include the use of FactSage thermodynamics software and other computational tools for glass reaction modeling.  The candidate will also possess strong laboratory glass melting and characterization skills.  Candidate will conduct experiments to validate and refine models.  The candidate will support glass research and development efforts across various business units including mobile consumer electronics, display technologies, advanced glass innovations, and optical fiber.  Documentation of technical advancements in the form of internal reports is expected.

Travel as needed for on-site technical support, conferences, etc.  Travel < 5% of time.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:  40 hour work week M-F, 9-5.  Schedule is flexible.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Minimum of PhD is Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent.
  • Candidate must have expertise in thermodynamic and kinetics of materials.
  • Candidate must have expertise in modeling using FactSage software.
  • Candidate must have expertise in the creation of phase diagrams for multicomponent oxide systems.
  • Candidate must have strong experimental laboratory skills in order to compose new glass formulations and measure key properties.

Experiences/Education - Desired

It is desired that the candidate has a breadth of basic skills in materials science to understand the relationships between glass structure and physical properties.  Fundamental understanding of mechanical, optical, and electrical properties of materials is strongly desired.
