Scope of Position:

The responsibilities of this position will include the design, development, and characterization of novel integrated optical waveguide and photonic components in glass and other platforms for large scale optical circuits, shuffles, fiber to chip coupling, and chip-to-chip interconnects. Knowledge in the areas of optics, mechanics, materials science, and electrical engineering is required to create efficient and high-bandwidth optical interconnect solutions for AI clusters, datacenter networks, and advanced computing applications. The work includes simulation and modeling of new designs for fabrication and collaboration with other scientists and engineers to build prototypes for testing and validation to expand state-of the art.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a technical expert in the optical technologies area
  • Employs hands-on laboratory approach to solve fundamental problems and contribute to product development and process research
  • Designs, builds, and/or modifies laboratory equipment or processes to complete a desired task
  • Designs and executes experiments to solve problems or develop new processes or products
  • Demonstrates new products and technologies by building prototypes
  • Provides technical guidance to technicians and scientists within the group
  • Uses rigorous processes and technical knowledge to build fundamental understanding
  • Document ideas and contributions in IDs, technical reports, and refereed publications
  • Identifies and articulates problems and develops and executes creative approaches to solving them
  • Provides day-to-day problem-solving support to Research, Development, and Manufacturing
  • Deliver technical presentations to customers, teams, and at seminars and conferences
  • Functions as a team member or team leader on focused projects

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • PhD in physics, electrical engineering, or optical science with a strong foundation of two or more of the following areas: optics, photonic packaging, materials science, and opto-mechanics is essential.
  • Expertise in optical design and layout software, coding, and 3D CAD tools like COMSOL, Lumerical, KLayout, SolidWorks, Python, MATLAB or similar software for the design of photonic systems
  • Hands-on experience with optical testing equipment including higher precision alignment stages, power meters, tunable lasers, spectrum analyzers, polarization analyzers
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret complex data and troubleshoot technical challenges independently

 

Desired Skills:

  • Understanding of semiconductor manufacturing and packaging processes like thin film processing, flip-chip assembly, laser processing can be beneficial.
  • Understanding of optical fiber and related telecommunications technologies

The range for this position is $102,650.00 - $141,145.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
