Role Purpose
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled scientist to join our innovative Inorganic Material Mechanics team in Product Reliability Technology directorate. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled scientist with a strong background in mechanical, or materials engineering to advance the development of fundamental mechanical behavior models, reliability methodologies, and characterization techniques for glass, glass‑ceramics, ceramics and thin optical films.

Key Responsibilities
- Use knowledge of physics and probabilistic methods to build deep understanding of the materials and processes across all of Corning’s Market Access Platforms, as well as Research and Development
- Apply solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, material science, numerical methods, and/or reliability analysis to solve early-stage problems, make product recommendations, improve product designs, and understand/predict product performance creatively and proactively
- Develop experiments to understand mechanical behavior of various components and thus enhance overall product reliability. Experimental validation of models through development and testing through surrogate tests. Mechanical characterization of various materials, especially brittle materials, to evaluate the fundamental properties or mechanical response
- Design and/or synthesize materials for desired mechanical/reliability requirements for IP, inventions, exploratory work, and/or to test hypothesis and improve system understanding
- Use existing tools and develop new experimental, analytical, and numerical models to resolve customer problems
- Partner closely with other simulation and experimental scientists/engineers across research, development, and engineering organizations
- Communicate results, both orally and in written form, in clear, precise English
- Protect Corning’s intellectual property by filing invention disclosures for patent application in timely fashion
- Document important findings in internal and external structured reports
Required Education
- Master’s or PhD degree in Applied Physics / Material Science and Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Aerospace Engineering / Engineering Mechanics / Applied Mathematics or related discipline required
- 2-5 years’ experience in Experimental mechanics, material science and engineering, and/or Numerical Simulations
- Experience in designing experiments and/or characterization methods, leveraging experimental methods for mechanical understanding
- Experience in probabilistic methods, Bayesian methods, optimization, and/or machine learning
- Experience in material science, potentially including design and synthesis of new materials
- In-depth understanding of model calibration, verification & validation, updating and prediction, sensitivity
- Experimental/lab experience (designing and/or executing experiments, troubleshooting experimental setups, using modeling and experimental results to solve problems)
- Strong foundation in physics and engineering science
- Creative, proactive, and innovative problem solving
- Self-starter, self-managed, excellent collaborator
- Results oriented and high commitment / energy
Desired Experiences
- Experience using, and programming in, numerical simulation software
- ABAQUS, COMSOL, MOOSE, ANSYS, FEniCS, or other finite element software
- Custom codes, analytical approaches
- Understanding material science, experience with material synthesization, composition design, understanding of composition and property relationships
- Strong programming experience to create and modify code
- Experience in both Linux and Windows environments, as well as ability to leverage high performance computing (HPC) systems
- Experience with advanced experimental and characterization methods, such as Digital Image Correlation, SEM/TEM, High speed video, Raman, Brillouin, XPS, NMR, and others

The range for this position is $80,984.00 - $111,353.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
