Role Purpose

The Senior Scientist – Applied Mechanics is responsible for developing and applying modeling tools for solving process and product design problems. Candidate will develop, validate, and apply numerical models to solve structural mechanics, fractural mechanics, brittle material reliability, and other applied mechanics problems. These models will help to understand physics, generate new concepts, and study design options for different Corning businesses.  Candidate must have an in-depth knowledge of solid mechanics, fractural mechanics, reliability and a strong expertise in numerical simulation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate, and apply advanced computational models to support product design, process development, and reliability analysis
  • Apply numerical simulation tools to analyze structural, thermal, and material behavior in complex engineering systems
  • Collaborate with experimental scientists and engineers to validate models and guide experimental design
  • Integrate modeling insights with experimental results to drive process optimization and product performance improvements
  • Partner with cross-functional teams across Research, Development, and Engineering to solve technically complex challenges
  • Communicate modeling approaches, results, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Document methodologies, results, and key findings in technical reports, presentations, and patent applications

Travel/Work hours

  • Expected travel time <10% (domestic).
  • 40 hours per week but some flexibility is required

Experiences/Education - Required

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, civil engineering, materials sciences, or related areas with emphasis on applied mechanics and Finite Element Analysis
  • 3 years of industrial experience in applied mechanics and computational analysis are required
  • Strong background in applied mechanics and computational analysis. Deep understanding of applied mechanics concept and theory.
  • Experience with commercial FEA software including but not limited to ANSYS, ABAQUS, and COMSOL.
  • Experience with modeling structural and thermal stress problems and material nonlinearities.
  • Ability to understand and breakdown real world problems into solvable modeling objectives.
  • Problem solving skills and strong engineering intuition. Results-oriented thinking.
  • Ability to interact with people of diverse backgrounds.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Problem solving skills with developing hypothesis on product or process related issues and effectively design approaches to find the root cause(s).
  • Experience in experiments and equipment design work, directly or in a collaboration.
  • Experience in chemical reactions and kinetics.
  • Knowledge and experience in fluid mechanics analysis.

Soft Skills

  • Must be self-motivated and demonstrate strong curiosity of the technical work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Respect others and be willing to work across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Able to work both independently and with a team.

 

This position supports immigration sponsorship.

 

The range for this position is $83,220.00 - $114,428.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
