Position Purpose
In this role you will apply Ceramic & Materials Science Engineering fundamental principles to solve deep technical challenges primarily related to glass and ceramic use in manufacturing processes. This corporate engineering role serves all existing businesses, with typical project assignments lasting 6 months to 2 years and ranging from stage 1 research projects through stage 5 manufacturing support. Our organization serves a flexible base of resources and knowledge experts which facilitates rapid solution development and emphasizes strong technical competence. You will serve as a material expert with interactions including raw materials, suppliers, fabrication, research, development, engineering and manufacturing.
Requirements
- PhD in Ceramic Engineering, Glass Science or Materials Science & Engineering
- 10+ years of experience in a Ceramic, Glass or Materials technical leadership role
- Deep technical knowledge in ceramic/glass material interaction for manufacturing processes, evaluation and failure mechanism understanding.
- Strong laboratory experience, hands on approach to developing and executing experimentation to drive to root cause understanding.
- Multi-tasking mandatory – Able to successfully balance multiple project responsibilities with different technical focus areas.
- User of existing literature to facilitate learning - internal and external publications, ASTM standards, journals, conference proceedings, etc.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build successful working relationships with internal business customers, external suppliers, and co-workers.
- High proficiency in written and verbal communication skills; report writing, clear concise PowerPoint presentation skills; comfortable presenting in front of groups ranging from technical peers to senior level leadership.
- Share and teach knowledge to junior level engineering. Works extremely well in team environment. Experience with coaching and mentoring others.
- Must be available for significant travel, primarily domestic, to multiple locations to support business needs

- Refractory and glass material understanding; microstructure, chemistry, high temperature material interactions, process engineering basics, ceramic forming techniques; dry and wet processing, sintering expertise
- Project management tools and approach
- Statistical data analysis, utilization of designed of experiments
Responsibilities
- Expected to become a subject matter expert and leader on material innovations for all Corning businesses. You will be responsible for implementing and coordinating practical solutions to solve the most challenging manufacturing problems
- New product manufacturing on existing platforms
- Optimization and implementation of future manufacturing technology
- Extension of manufacturing platform life
- Defect mitigation through material compatibility understanding
- Cost reduction and second source supplier identification
- Material focused equipment failure mode analysis, root cause determination and resolution recommendations
- Supplier engagement to define new materials enabling Corning manufacturing processes
- Lead and develop laboratory testing regimen and process simulations to extend knowledge base and support/disprove hypotheses
- Work with laboratory staff to ensure optimal turnaround time of material testing and experimental efficiency
- Share technical findings with colleagues ranging from technical peers to senior level leadership providing information which enables data-based decisions which drive to project success
- Lead and maintain high quality engineering principles, including extensive use of statistics, structured problem-solving methods such as KT, DOE, and DMAIC six sigma tools
- Mentor and coach junior level engineers to become future leaders within Corning
- Document all project findings in internal, structured reports and presentations. Protect Corning's intellectual property by filing invention disclosures for patent application

The range for this position is $109,142.00 - $150,070.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
