Role Purpose
This position is for a materials process technician to support the work of the Surface Science and Technology Capability. The incumbent will aid in the development of surface treatments and conduct mechanistic studies to solve challenges for new and existing products and processes by building fundamental understanding of surface phenomena. Preparing baths and samples for ion exchange and surface treatments, analyzing the resulting materials and surfaces through metrology, and performing and developing new tests on the resulting surfaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparing ion exchange baths & surface treatments, organizing samples, and processing samples.
- Experimentation with the treatment parameters: chemicals, temperature, time, etc.
- Conducting and/or coordinating analysis of baths, surface treatment solutions, and samples. Including though not limited to IOX metrology.
- Documentation of results and sharing with the team
Experiences/Education - Required
- Minimum Associate's degree
- Computer literacy
- Background in lab enviroments
- Some working knowledge of basic materials physics and chemistry
- Ability to learn new types of metrologiesExperience working with lab scale instruments and equipment (including software-controlled) and handling small parts
- Ability to learn bath making techniques and chemical treatments
- Utilize or create spreadsheets to perform experiments and to log data
- Maintain inventory of commonly used chemicals and consumables and follow procedures to procure new or additional chemicals and materials
- Ability to learn to run analytical equipment such as microscopes, FTIR, UV/Vis, pH meters, etc.
- Prepare glass or other materials substrates for various surface chemistry treatments and subsequent testing
- Safety compliant and able to lead lab 5S activities
- Scientifically observant, methodical, meticulous, and curious
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Bachelor's degree
- Able to run ion exchange or surface modification processes to meet product requirements
- Able to develop experiments to test hypotheses
- Able to find and work with vendors for raw materials and consumables

The range for this position is $70,094.00 - $96,379.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
