Role Purpose

Drive project-level SS&T Finishing efforts to develop surface/edge treatments and processes that add product value from concept to scale (in-house or with contract manufacturers) and at cost. Emphasis is on process understanding, IP generation, and materials finishing. Responsibilities include managing projects, designing experiments, creating detailed plans, and communicating progress to senior leadership. Candidate must acquire process engineering and materials expertise to develop finishing processes and equipment for all project stages, from early concept to high-volume manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage detailed project plans, estimate timelines, monitor schedules, and track budgets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve finishing process challenges for various Corning divisions.
  • Design and analyze finishing system processes and materials, including hands-on proof-of-concept work.
  • Work with suppliers to specify and procure finishing process elements (e.g., machines, tools, chemicals).
  • Set up and document systems, interfacing with internal and external teams to ensure functionality.
  • Create technical reports, develop IP (e.g., invention disclosures), and present work to peers, customers, and senior leadership.
  • Advise system integrators or subcontractors on finishing machine development.
  • Procure, implement, and document systems, assisting in operational training.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field
  • Minimum 8 years in a technical field, including:
    • Process/Product Development
    • Equipment Engineering
    • Project/Engineering Management
    • Technology/Product Transfer
    • Machining/Metrology Processes
  • Expertise in design and integration of finishing processes/systems for glass, ceramic, and metallic materials.
  • Experience in edge/surface grinding and metrology systems.
  • Knowledge of material reliability science and its relationship to finishing processes.
  • Problem-solving skills using experimental design and statistical analysis.
  • Travel Requirements - 10%–20% travel depending on project assignments, with possible international travel. Travel may be required during equipment/process installation, debug, start-up, and for routine interaction with customers and suppliers.

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • MS or PhD preferred.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor materials processing and related machine systems.
  • CAD skills (SolidWorks) and willingness to perform hands-on work (up to 25%).
  • Familiarity with Corning finishing contract manufacturers.

The range for this position is $95,481.00 - $131,287.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
