Role Purpose

Lead the development and deployment of advanced measurement systems using optical metrology and machine vision to support product and process development, quality control, and manufacturing operations. Partner with—and at times lead—cross-functional teams to deploy, sustain, and optimize these systems. Drive technology transfer from laboratory development to production, including integration of off-the-shelf solutions. Identify enabling technologies and contribute to Corning’s broader technical community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, build, and testing of measurement systems incorporating optical metrology and machine vision techniques.
    • Prototype and demonstrate proof-of-concepts in a lab environment.
    • Transfer technology from early-stage development to production-ready solutions.
  • Develop and implement image processing algorithms for feature extraction, classification, and metrology.
  • Utilize novel computer vision and machine learning methods to perform object detection/classification tasks, such as segmentation and detection for production defects.
  • Lead the development of measurement solutions that are suitable for use in manufacturing and leverage external suppliers for key technologies or strengths such as system integration.
  • Work with a variety of multi-functional groups (Development, Quality, IT, Purchasing, Operations) to deliver effective solutions.
  • Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement improvements to measurement systems or production processes.
  • Create and update documentation, including system specifications, operating procedures, research reports, software manuals, trade secrets, and intellectual property.
  • Train engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel to use and maintain measurement systems.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize measurement systems, both remotely and onsite, using data analysis and performance metrics.
  • Provide remote and onsite troubleshooting of production measurement systems.
  • Provide supervision of a laboratory and/or process as assigned; build trust across the project team and support an inclusive environment.
  • Manage suppliers and external solution development partners as necessary.
  • Present work and project updates to internal customers, leadership, and project teams.

Experiences/Education - Required

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Systems Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.
  • Hands-on experience with optical metrology and/or machine vision systems: minimum 8 years with a BS, 6 years with an MS, or 4 years with a PhD.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise with optical systems, imaging hardware, and measurement instruments, including designing complete measurement systems.
  • Advanced programming experience with software packages such as Python CV/ML packages, OpenCV, LabVIEW, MATLAB, Halcon, or others for image processing.
  • Knowledge of machine vision algorithms (blob analysis, edge detection, morphology, feature extraction, classification, etc.).
  • Proven experience developing, training, and deploying machine learning techniques such as CNN’s.
  • Advanced knowledge of Machine Vision systems (optics, lighting, cameras, image acquisition, image analysis) with advanced hands-on experience.
  • Experience utilizing Metrology systems; microscopes (2D and 3D), CMM systems, non-contact measurements.
  • Experience working with and managing outside vendors for implementing hardware/software solutions to measurement problems.
  • Experience with fiber optic measurement systems and handling of fiber / optical connectors
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal customers to understand metrology requirements and deliver results that are effectively interpreted and applied.
  • Data retrieval, plotting, and analysis using tools like Excel, MATLAB, or Python
