Scope of Position
The individual as a ceramic processing scientist will provide technical insight, design, and execute experiments to develop a fundamental understanding of ceramic processes. The person will develop in-depth process understanding to help introduce new products and improve product performance. The major focus of this position is to support new process technologies being researched by Corning to support products such as energy material, battery material, honeycomb filters, and other emerging ceramic composites. In addition, the individual should also be able to provide technical support to development and engineering, organizations through transferring processes and knowledge as necessary. The person is expected to have broad technical interest, a strong motivational drive as well as sound interpersonal skills to work with interdisciplinary teams of diverse cultural, educational, and ethnic backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have good presentation and communication skills. Some travel is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Accountable for all aspects of lab safety and adherence to Corning Values
- Develop new or advance existing processes to produce inorganic ceramic green bodies leveraging the fundamental science in areas like tape casting, gel casting, slip casting, powder processing, forming, and sintering.
- Develop and optimize organic binder formulations and characteristics to facilitate the processes to produce the ceramic green bodies.
- Engage in process R&D work including experimental planning, execution, data analysis, and communicating results.
- Collaborate closely with development, engineering, and operational groups in developing and transferring fundamental understandings learned from evaluating new process and/or product concepts.
Requirement Education and Experience
- Minimum Master's degree in Physical Chemistry, Ceramics, Polymer, Material Science or relevant discipline AND 5+ years of relevant experience.
- Solid background in first principles of inorganic materials processing technology (tape casting, slip casting, milling/mixing, rheology, sintering, etc.) with emphasis on ceramics and glass ceramics
- Ability to work with people of diverse technical and cultural backgrounds.
- Hands-on experimental skills, including use of forming equipment (extrusion, tape casting, molding, dry and hot pressing) and milling/mixing equipment
- Data analysis and ability to correlate data to real-life applications.
- Personal dedication to continuous improvement in lab safety
Desired Education and Experience
- PhD degree preferred
- Exposure to Industrial research & development environments.
- Extensive Knowledge and experience in ceramic processing from laboratory to pilot skills.
- Strong work ethics with the desire to learn new skills.
- Background/experience organic binders used in ceramic green body formulation.
- Ability to formulate testing protocols for desired material properties, starting with basic analytic capabilities (Rheology, FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM, etc.)

The range for this position is $92,003.00 - $126,505.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
