Job Title: Strategic Sourcing and Refractory Category Manager, Capital


Role Purpose:

Provide comprehensive support for the REFRACTORY category, in support of the Refractory Category Strategy across multiple businesses. 

Leads the development and execution of Global Supply Management (GSM) Strategic Sourcing strategies, policies, tactics and objectives for assigned complex global commodities that align and are linked with the business units, commercial, supply chain and manufacturing strategies.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Refractory Council and Engineering on key initiatives that will drive safety of supply and cost reduction;
  • Administer the Refractory Category Council and implement Refractory Category Strategy;
  • Assist with the Supplier Relationship Management of refractory suppliers, including risk management, fostering sustainable strategic relations, qualification of new suppliers;
  • Develops and/or assists with Strategic Sourcing plans and objectives (short & long term) based on forecasts of future demand and taking into account economic and currency trends and conditions that affect GSM, the business, and the global commodity sourced.
  • Works with the Business, GSM, and Buyers on assigned global commodities to prepare and solicit competitive bids, quotations, and proposals with pertinent specifications, terms and conditions.
  • Develops and reviews project specifications, statements of work, performance terms and accept/reject criteria.
  • Conducts negotiations with potential and/or current major suppliers to obtain maximum value.
  • Leads the development and communication of global supply intelligence for assigned commodities.
  • Supports the Supplier Relationship Management process for the assigned commodities.
  • Develop, maintain, and ensure Shared Objectives are met.
  • Champions, advocates, and ensures compliance with the Global Buying Policy.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Identify business needs and get aligned with business stakeholders to support Refractory Category Plan objectives
  • Develop, maintain and execute Shared Objectives and Service Level Agreements
  • Support cost saving initiatives and projects
  • Support capital engineering projects across multiple businesses
  • Responsible for negotiation for best possible cost service guarantee and develop “win-win” strategy that achieve sustainable relationship with suppliers
  • Support management of key supplier performance where necessary to ensure uninterrupted supply
  • Develop and cultivate effective relationships with suppliers
  • Implement supplier agreements/contracts when beneficial by working with cross-functional stakeholders and suppliers to reach agreement on contract terms and conditions

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering
  • Or, Bachelors Degree in Finance, or Supply Chain
    • Specific experience with materials/refractory.
  • Experience in – operations, engineering, and supply management.
    • Specific experience with Buying or Strategic Sourcing.


  • Materials or refractory engineering experience.
  • Experience across multiple businesses, divisions and/or technologies.
  • Experience with global manufacturing and business through work or project experience.
  • Experience working in a matrix environment or on a cross functional team.
  • Category management experience
