As our intern, you will be involved with Research and Development within Corning’s Scientific & Technologies (S&T) segment.

To be considered for an internship at Corning Incorporated, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher. You must also have a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale).

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

This position is a summer internship in the area of glass surfaces and coatings. The position involves experimental work to help identify optimal materials and processes to create glass coatings with desirable attributes. The candidate will be assigned to work closely with one or more scientists and is expected to conduct laboratory experiments, set up new measurements, process and analyze data, and report out results to the larger project team.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities: Practical day-to-day responsibilities are as follows:

  • Work with a scientist to design and execute experiments including evaluating new materials, optimizing coating formulation and processes, operation of laboratory equipment such as coaters and furnaces, and preparation of samples for characterization.
  • Coordinate laboratory and characterization activities
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data and recommend next steps.

 

Travel requirements:

  • None

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • M-F 8am – 5pm
  • Some scheduling flexibility available
  • Duration: Summer 2021, 8-12 weeks

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

  • Graduate student enrolled in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Engineering program.

 

Required Skills:

  • Basic chemistry and math proficiency.
  • Technical writing experience. 
  • MS Office
  • Python experience desired 
  • Must be detail oriented.

 

Desired Skills

  • Understanding of materials science.
  • Prior experience working in a laboratory.

 

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership):

  • Good oral and written communication skills. 
  • Flexibility in coordination of project work.
