Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):
Corning’s summer internship experience is rich with hands-on learning. You’ll live, work, and experience the communities in which Corning operates, while building on-the-job skills. As our intern, you will work directly with an x-ray diffraction characterization team in support of high temperature x-ray diffraction research. The goal of the internship will be to evaluate and improve high temperature x-ray diffraction methods leading to fundamental understanding of materials. One specific project will be to evaluate high temperature x-ray diffraction calibration procedures and document a novel method of calibration using an anisotropic expansion material.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
• Interface with various research and engineering groups to understand x-ray diffraction characterization needs and help develop an experimental plan to provide fundamental understanding of materials.
• Review experimental data, communicate results to projects and help draw conclusions to further material understanding.
• This position also requires operating safely in the laboratory.
The purpose of our Intern Program is to raise the bar on talent by strengthening our pipeline for entry level roles for our immediate and future needs.
To be considered for an internship at Corning Incorporated, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher. You must also have a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale).

Travel requirements (please note if international): Travel to local universities to access characterization equipment may be necessary on a limited basis.
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
• M-F, typically 40 hours per week
• Duration: Summer 2021, 8-12 weeks
Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):
• Completed at least Junior Year in Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, Geology or related discipline.
• Interested or enrolled in graduate school in materials science field.

• Basic knowledge of x-ray diffraction
• Scientific curiosity
• Experience in a laboratory setting
• Independent
• Good written and verbal communication skills and people skills; ability to interact with scientists, team members and external vendors.
