Role Purpose
This position is responsible for promoting an environmentally safe and healthy work environment for all employees throughout the manufacturing facility and to maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations. This position supports the Corning Life Sciences facility located in Durham, NC.
Responsibilities
- Facilitating and communicating Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) programs and policies.
- Drive enforcement of all local EHS policies, standards, and procedures.
- Develops and conducts employee environmental health and safety training.
- Responds to EH&S emergencies, investigates accidents, and recommends corrective and preventive action.
- Maintain compliance with laws, codes, and regulations.
- Following corporate and/or local policies, standards, and procedures:
- Ensures effective delivery of all Safety and Environmental (S&E) related training and education programs and maintain S&E records.
- Develops and maintain plant emergency response plans and ensure appropriate training. Maintains metrics of plant EHS performance and provide quarterly reporting.
- Works with site leadership to develop the Safety Annual Plan and tracks accomplishments.
- Works with leadership to set annual targets for injury reduction and drive necessary actions to meet or exceed targets.
- Attends quarterly division/corporate safety meetings and represents the interest of the plant.
- Works with internal and external groups to coordinate industrial and chemical hygiene, safety, health, and environmental audits/ inspections.
- Maintains close communication with corporate safety and environmental groups.
- Conducts training as needed to ensure compliance with all applicable EPA and OSHA standards and maintain all OSHA logs and required recordkeeping required for S&E compliance.
- Leads investigation and root cause analysis of work-related injuries and environmental incidents in conjunction with supervisors/managers, facilitate action planning to prevent reoccurrence.
- Coordinates reporting, tracking, and trend analysis of workplace injuries when they occur and ensure corporate reporting standards are followed.
- Maintains existing MSDS system and ensure new materials and products have appropriate MSDS sheets and training.
- Performs analysis and recommends improvements to equipment and processes to improve safety and prevent accidents.
- Conducts ergonomic evaluations in office and lab areas independently or with support from experienced consultant and implements cost effective solutions.
- Works with vendor to ensure emergency response and first aid training is conducted.
- Manages internal S&E Audits and ensure timely corrective action for discrepancies.
- Directs the activities of the safety committee.
- Manages occupational health and security personnel.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor’s degree in technical field (e.g. Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering, or equivalent related experience)
- 1 year of environmental or safety experience in a manufacturing environment or equivalent.
- Extensive knowledge of S&E regulations.
- Strong computer skills; proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Knowledge and experience with of ISO14001 certification process.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Certified Green Belt
- Experience with risk and statistical analysis.

The range for this position is $60,410.00 - $83,065.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
