Purpose of Position:

Leads process development initiatives to improve existing products and manufacturing processes and introduce new manufacturing and engineering processes to the Durham site. Develop and integrate new technologies to the manufacturing environment. Support the daily response to operational upsets and champion long-term solutions and systems improvements to enhance the safety, quality, productivity, and reliability of manufacturing systems. Actively support, improve, and ensure compliance to the site business and quality management systems through documentation preparation, process auditing, and completion of corrective actions in response to customer complaints and audit findings. This position reports through operations management, and works closely with functional leaders, engineers, and external stakeholders to establish work priorities and work assignments across the various functional groups.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Supervise technicians including training, feedback, and annual performance reviews
  • Monitor utilization and yield operating levels for the production community and lead project efforts to maximize OEE & cost reduction
  • Support / Lead CLS technology receivership activities
  • Active participation in CLS community leadership functions and forums
  • Continue the development of the CLS MET organization to include further defining roles/responsibilities, communication paths, performance measures and coverage plans.
  • Have consistent interface and training initiatives with CLS Engineering supervisors to grow MET technician skills sets
  • Interface with the other Operations, Maintenance, & Facilities Supervisors to ensure plant-wide consistency and share best practices.
  • Ensure appropriate levels of troubleshooting steps are taken based on process feedback, checklists, control charts, attribute management and other information
  • Identify and communicate community wide performance opportunities, objective shortfalls and resource requirements.
  • Recommend & implement improvements to process and/or equipment and drive equipment robustness / reliability.
  • Submit monthly reports that accurately summarize performance.
  • Work with operations to gather support needed, information, and provide updates on process status.
  • Quickly respond to production and process upsets, troubleshoot production issues, diagnose problems, and implement corrective action (machine fix, process change, etc.) to reestablish operations.
  • Work with operations to further develop SPC/SQC for process discipline and control (PD/PC).
  • Provides technical leadership in assigned processes and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Use of engineering first principles like MEE or DMAIC to drive mechanistic understanding and root cause identifications.
  • Ensure adherence by all site functional groups to standard processes, business and quality systems, and governmental regulations (OSHA, ISO, QSR, FDA, GMP, etc.).
  • Documents changes via the change control process.
  • Train maintenance and operations personnel on processes and machinery to transfer operations knowledge and ensure operational efficiency and product quality.
  • Strictly adhere to requirements of the plant quality systems including compliance to the change control procedure when introducing or modifying manufacturing processes and equipment. Ensure compliance of business and quality systems in manufacturing, i.e. OSHA, ISO13485, ISO14001 QSR CFR 21 part 820, GMP, etc. through audits against documented procedures.
  • This position supports a 24/7 manufacturing operation.
  • Must respond to off-hours calls to resolve manufacturing process upsets or plant systems downtime events, flexing work schedule as required to meet business needs.
  • Provide indirect leadership to assigned technical and hourly associates to achieve departmental quality, quantity, service, cost, and safety goals. 


Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Engineering or related technical field
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in an engineering, technical, or manufacturing role or environment.
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred.



  • Thorough understanding and experience in manufacturing operations including production requirements, support systems, and personnel.
  • Hands on technical experience in manufacturing processes, machine reliability, equipment improvement, and project management.
  • Meaningful experience with and strong capability to work well in a team based environment.
  • Must be highly motivated with good organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of providing strong leadership for the department.
  • Must have a working knowledge of materials management systems, manufacturing equipment and processes, good manufacturing practices, and employee relations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a high-performance work team culture focusing on the plant goals of safety, quality, schedule and cost.
