Scope of Position:

Concurrently with the product development team, define, develop, and deliver the lowest cost manufacturing products and processes for high power laser optics which meet all technical requirements. This position will primarily support the Laser Optics (LO) manufacturing group with product and process development responsibilities. This position interfaces with both the development group and the plant operations group.

 

Required Skills:

• Minimum BS in Mechanical, Optical, chemical or Manufacturing Engineering

• 3+ years’ experience

• Knowledge of optical components and optical materials

• Experience in precision machining and measurement including CNC equipment and programming

• Experience using 3D solid modeling software

• Experience with process development in an optics shop environment

• Knowledge of plano polishing on pitch lapping equipment

• Knowledge of optical metrology equipment including interferometers & autocollimators

• Knowledge of optical material and coating interaction with high power lasers at UV wavelengths

• Desire to learn new technologies and become a subject matter expert

• Aptitude for precision hands-on optical and mechanical skills

• Strong communication skills including written, verbal, and formal presentations Day to Day

 

Responsibilities:

• To champion the use of DF/X tools on product development teams o Provide expertise on the implementation and execution of DF/X principles and tools, facilitating their correct use; identify opportunities to add new or improve existing DF/X tools and develop as appropriate o Consider lowest production costs with design alternatives

• Compile Cost Estimates for quoting, staffing plan, and resource scheduling

• Participate in the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Critical Design Review (CDR) of new product development

• Perform Risk Assessments and manage Risk Reduction activities

• Specify new manufacturing capabilities via development of new techniques, or specifying new equipment, tools, fixtures, test equipment

• Develop process work instructions, flow charts, process sheets, and other required documentation

• Responsible for pre-transfer (prototypes & pilots) build quality and delivery commitments

• Train first round of manufacturing personnel on new capabilities

• Protect intellectual property by documenting key competitive processes

• Stay current with the latest manufacturing trends and seek out the appropriate experts when needed

• Assess existing manufacturing capability gaps and recommend development activities

• Solid modeling of fixtures & tools using Creo CAD software

• Specify manufacturing equipment, tools, fixtures, and test equipment with their facility requirements

• Set-up and operate new production equipment

 

Job Duties:

• Process development is accomplished in a consistent, standardized manner utilizing a knowledge center of best practices and DF/X methodologies

• Engagement of the plant receivers (process engineering, operations associates, quality, supply chain, etc.) during the development phase through informal and formal design reviews

• Job responsibilities and skills for this position will vary and could range from fabricating optical, inspecting and/or testing optics
