The purpose of the Mechanical Engineering Intern Program is to raise the bar on talent by strengthening our pipeline for entry level roles for immediate and future needs.

Purpose of Role:

  • This role as a summer engineering intern will support the manufacturing and engineering of world-class, high-precision optical systems. This is a dynamic position for an individual to work as part of Corning Advanced Optics’ manufacturing team.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Project – lead implementation of new piece of equipment. Focus on NEAT forms, Training documentation, outside vendors, etc.
  • Experiment – Lead experiment to determine new material to use in Mechanical Fabrication for Laser Optics
  • Improve safety by eliminating hazardous material, reduce cost / time to manufacture
  • Documentation a. Complete Work Instructions for 2 pieces of equipment i. Update Training Matrix \
  • Add procedures for 2 pieces of equipment / Complete analysis
  • Implement 5S internal program
  • Communication Board
  • Kaizens, Audit Schedule, Problem Reports, IDMAICS, Safety Improvements, etc.

 

Qualifications:

  • We are seeking a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science Engineering / Technology candidate - Junior or Senior Year - Minimum of a 3.0 overall GPA
  • We are seeking a basic understanding of mechanical design practices, mechanical fabrication and assembly techniques.
  • High level of technical curiosity and ability to learn, develop, and advance technical skills in mechanical design, precision engineering and opto-mechanical product development.
  • Ability to use experimentation to develop basic process knowledge, design prototype test systems, and perform proof of principle testing to validate design approach.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Confidence in interaction with all levels of the organization. (Production techs to Sr. Leadership)
  • Ability to function on a product development team of multi-disciplinary engineers.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Working knowledge of analysis tools such as MatLab or Excel.
