The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Scope of Position:

  • Concurrently with the product development team, define, develop and deliver the lowest cost opto-mechanical manufacturing processes that meet all technical requirements to the production plant(s).
  • The focus of this role is developing new opto-mechanical production capabilities that do not currently exist in the manufacturing plant but are needed to meet new product design requirements.
  • Perform as key member of the team starting with program launch to enable early involvement and concurrent engineering of manufacturing processes.
  • Process development is accomplished in a consistent, standardized manner utilizing a knowledge center of standard methodologies and DF/X methodologies.
  • Engage the plant receivers (process engineering, operations associates, quality, supply chain, etc.) during the development phase through informal and formal design reviews.
  • Individuals applying for this position must be team oriented and able to work collaboratively with others.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • To champion the use of DF/X tools on product development teams:
  • Consider the lowest production costs with design alternatives
  • Attempt to eliminate manufacturing/assembly waste with product design
  • Ensure products are designed for stable processes that are already in use; if current processes do not meet new requirements, develop new processes concurrently during product development.
  • Participate in the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Critical Design Review (CDR) of all new product development.
  • Participate in Manufacturing Risk Assessments and handle Risk Reduction activities.
  • Specify new manufacturing capabilities via development of new techniques, or specifying new equipment, tools, fixtures, test equipment.
  • Develop process flow charts, work instructions, process sheets, checklists, forms, and other required documentation.
  • Responsible for pre-transfer (prototypes & pilots) build quality and delivery commitments.
  • Train first round of manufacturing personnel on new capabilities.
  • Stay current with the latest manufacturing trends and seek out the appropriate specialists when needed.
  • Assess existing manufacturing capability gaps and recommend development activities.
  • Perform manufacturing tasks and activities, as trained, and in compliance with work instructions.
  • Responsible for housekeeping and autonomous maintenance of work area and equipment.

 

Education & Experience:

  • We require a minimum of a HS diploma with an Associates degree (or equivalent experience) in optics or other technical field is preferred
  • Desire to learn new technologies and become a SME
  • We are seeking an aptitude for precision hands-on mechanical skills; experience with assembling close tolerance parts that may have unusual shapes or parameters
  • Strong communication skills, written, and verbal
  • Strong PC skills and ability to operate electronic equipment
  • Dedicated and willing to work off hours to ensure product is completed on schedule
  • Ideal candidate would have interest and some experience in: Optics and optical materials, Precision machining and measurement, Precision alignment, positioning and assembly, Interferometric testing, or Manufacturing processing

 

Working Conditions:

  • Work environment is temperature controlled and may require working in a cleanroom
  • Safety glasses and safety shoes are required
  • May have to lift or moves materials up to 5 pounds frequently, occasionally up to 15 pounds
