Purpose of the Position:

The position is in the Advanced Optics surface finishing and optical fabrication development group based in Fairport, NY. The individual will be working closely with the optical fabrication development team SMEs, plant engineers, supporting the group objective of developing novel optical fabrication and metrology technologies as well as consulting on projects in the greater Corning organization. The role involves developing innovative optical measurement technologies for high-precision optical elements (lenses, mirrors, prisms, etc.) from conception to transfer to manufacturing. The candidate will aim for a thorough understanding of metrology instruments, solve problems, and improve processes as part of a team using structured problem-solving methods such as KT, DOEs, etc… The individual will be responsible to develop and maintain a scientific network inside and outside of the corporation and it is expected that the candidate will become an optical metrology SME sought after from across the division and S&T for consultation. The candidate is expected to document results by authoring internal/external reports and filing invention disclosures.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Design and build novel optical technologies for improved resolution, precision, and imaging capability.
  • Identification of instrumental error sources, metrology error budget management.
  • Perform software coding and the creation of metrology analysis scripts. supporting all facets of optical manufacturing process chain.
  • Principle developer responsible for compiling analytical models to support design, fabrication, and metrology functions. This may include exploring intelligent design and its implementation.
  • Cost estimation for component metrology support of prototype and commercial opportunities.
  • Scope out technical risk and challenges for component metrology of prototype optics.
  • Work with division and production engineers on schedule and cost improvements of new and current production metrology instrument and processes.
  • Perform timely measurements of optical elements in support of prototype optical fabrication and development of new manufacturing processes.
  • Write process documentation and assist with the transfer of metrology solutions developed by the development group for production.
  • Keep current with technological advances in optical metrology through scientific literature, conferences, interfacing with optics experts, vendors, etc.
  • Write technical reports on new technologies developed. Give papers at conferences.
  • Give periodic presentations on technical progress and new technologies to a broad audience.
  • Assist legal department with the management of IP (patents, trade secrets, etc).


Education & Experience: M.S. required; Ph.D. preferred. Optical Science/Engineering preferred, will consider Physics, ME as well. Minimum 3 years’ experience in metrology and/or high-precision measurements.


Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of metrology measurement instrumentation from design to final hardware validation including build, and testing.
  • Experience designing and building high-precision measurement systems.
  • Knowledge and experienced working in geometrical/physical optics.
  • Knowledge of interferometric measurement principles.
  • Hands-on hardware assembly and system troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of uncertainty analysis and error budgeting principles, including environmental influence on instruments.
  • Experience characterizing instrument capabilities (repeatability, reproducibility, noise, gage R&R).
  • Ability to program and perform data analysis in Python, Matlab, C++, MatLab/Simulink, LabView or other comparable language.
  • Knowledge and experience working with optics, optics materials for a variety of applications.
  • Deliver results within budget and schedule.
  • Technical writing and presentation to a variety of audiences.


Desired Skills:

  • Prior Knowledge and experience using optical modeling tools, such as CodeV, LightTools, Zemax, etc.
  • Familiarity with metrology analysis softwares (Zygo MetroPro, QED.NET Toolkit).
  • Familiarity with asphere/freeform optical manufacturing and testing.
  • Experience with high-precision DUV, EUV, X-ray optics for semicon applications.
  • Application of Design of Experiment (DOE) and statistical data analysis methods.
  • Experience operating an AFM. • Ability to generate simple drawing with CAD systems.

Work Schedule: 40+ hours per week, + flex.


Travel Requirements: 10% - 15%. Domestic travel, primarily to Keene, NH, Canton NY, and Corning NY. Some international travel possible (conferences, trade shows, customer meetings).
