The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Description

Summer engineering intern position to support the manufacturing and engineering of world-class, high-precision optical systems in Corning's Advanced Optics division. The summer intern will work with Corning Fairport’s optical design team to model, tolerance and analyze complex optical systems from concept to completion.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in a STEM field, including optics, imaging science, and physics.
  • Coursework in geometrical optics, aberration theory and interferometry.
  • Working knowledge of analysis tools such as MATLAB, Python, or Visual Basic programming in Excel.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later
  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
  • Be willing to work at the posted job location

 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with optical design software (e.g. CODE V, Zemax, LightTools, etc.).
  • Coursework in physical optics

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
