Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Hands on development of new optical fabrication processes for glass, crystals and other optical substrates, and optical components including flats, spheres, aspheres, and freeform.
  • Design, build, and validate new optical fabrication systems. Scope out and procure commercially available platforms.
  • Carry out tests and validation of optical fabrication processes to deepen fundamental understanding of the physics, chemistry, etc. involved in surface finishing processes encompassing early stage grinding through final high precision polishing, including alternative materials and complex surface shapes.
  • Develop models for new optical fabrication processes. Verify and optimize model accuracy using experimental and historical data.
  • Write software code in support of motion control systems.
  • Scope out technical risk and challenges for component fabrication of prototype and development commercial opportunities.
  • Use sound scientific and engineering principles when analyzing optical fabrication processes experimental results.
  • Work with mechanical, control, and software engineers to devise, build and control multi-axis fabrication platforms.
  • Work with division and production engineers to understand current production fabrication limitations and identify avenues for improvements.
  • Participate on teams to support project and department objectives.
  • Communicate results to peers, management, and technology receivers.
  • Develop training documentation and assist with the transfer of optical fabrication solutions developed by the development group to division and plant engineering.
  • Keep current with technological advances in optical fabrication through scientific literature, conferences, interfacing with appropriate experts, etc.  


Travel Requirements (please note if international):

  • 10% - 15%.  Domestic travel, primarily to Fairport, NY, Keene, NH, Canton NY, and Corning NY.
  • Some international travel possible (conferences, trade shows, customer meetings).  


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours per week, + flex  


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

  • B.S. required, M.S., Ph.D. preferred. Degree in Optical Science/Engineering preferred, will consider ME, EE and Physics degrees as well.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in optical fabrication processes or a related field.  


Required Skills

  • Knowledge and hands on experience working with optics, optical materials for a variety of applications.
  • Knowledge and experience working with materials and interactions with optics and optical surfaces.
  • Knowledge of asphere optical fabrication techniques.
  • Knowledge of optical metrology measurement methods such as probing, interferometry, defect inspections, etc.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of optical fabrication technologies for finishing brittle optical substrates including grinding, fining, and chemical mechanical polishing.
  • Well-rounded familiarity with commercially available optical fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to build optical fabrication models based on experimental results as well as theoretical physical and chemical principles of grinding, polishing and/or diamond turning fabrication processes.
  • Strong analytical and modeling skills, including computational skills.
  • Application of Design of Experiment (DOE) and statistical data analysis methods.
  • Optical fabrication equipment assembly, test, measurement, and system troubleshooting.    


Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of magnetorheological finishing (MRF) and ion beam figuring (IBF) technologies is highly desirable.
  • Lab Windows, LabView, C++, or other equivalent programming platforms experience is a plus.
  • Basic ability to program and perform data analysis in MatLab.
  • Knowledge of asphere/freeform optical testing is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of material characterization methods (microscopy, SEM, X-ray diffraction, etc.) is an asset.
  • Experience with high-precision DUV, EUV, X-ray optics is a plus.
