Scope of Position

The focus of this role is developing new opto-mechanical production capabilities and equipment that do not currently exist in the manufacturing plant but are needed to meet new product design requirements for complex lens assemblies and optical modules. 

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Work within multi-disciplined project teams that analyze, engineer & build lens systems from conception to completion. 
  • Collaborate with mechanical, metrology, and software engineers to design and integrate fully functional products and custom assembly equipment.  Ensure products are designed for stable processes that are already in use; if current processes do not meet new requirements, develop new processes concurrently during product development.
  • Process development is accomplished in a consistent, standardized manner utilizing a knowledge center of best practices and DF/X methodologies.  Must be able to design, execute, draw conclusions, document, and present robust experiments.
  • Create and document processes and manufacturing methods and procedures for transfer to manufacturing. Engage the plant receivers (process engineering, operations associates, quality, supply chain, etc.) during the development phase through informal and formal design reviews.
  • Responsible for pre-transfer (prototypes & pilots) build quality and delivery commitments.
  • Train manufacturing personnel on new capabilities and to execute assembly and build processes for manufacturing of products. 
  • Must be able to work and communicate with people from all levels and groups within the organization including multi-disciplinary project team members, operations associates, subject matter experts in research, and engineers in other locations.  
  • Must be able to work in an environment with changing priorities, high ambiguity of activities, and continual learning and development.  Must be able to manage self.
  • 10% (could be up to 25%), domestic & international travel. Typical travel includes training, networking opportunities, customer visits, conferences, tradeshows, and benchmarking activities as required. 

 

Hours of work: 

  • Typical work hours, M-F, 8am-5pm. Extra and off hours may be required during times of heightened project activity in order to meet deliverables.
  • Work locations are currently split between Fairport Plant and Penfield Engineering headquarters; personal transportation between sites (10 min drive) is expected depending upon project responsibilities; office cubicles provided at each facility.   

Requirements

  • HS diploma; an AS degree (or equivalent experience) in optics or other technical field is preferred.
  • 2-5 years in manufacturing and troubleshooting optical systems. Aptitude for precision hands-on mechanical skills; experience with assembling close tolerance parts that may have unusual shapes or parameters.
  • Experience with autocollimator / alignment telescopes, optical and mechanical alignment techniques, precision spindles and goniometers electro-optics, precision mechanics. 
  • Proficiency in Excel is required.  Proficiency in statistical analysis software is a plus. 
  • Must have strong laboratory skills working in a cleanroom environment. 
  • Must have strong presentation and technical writing skills to enable communication within the program team and with internal and external customers.
  • Ideal candidate would have interest and experience with: optics and optical materials; precision machining and measurement; precision alignment, positioning and assembly; Interferometric testing; manufacturing processing

The range for this position is  $67,194.00   -  $92,392.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
