Corning is hiring a Coating Process Engineer to support manufacturing operations at its Advanced Optics facility in Fairport, New York. This is a full time, onsite role supporting second shift operations (approximately 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM) with less than 5% travel. The Fairport site produces advanced optical components used in semiconductor manufacturing and precision inspection systems and is undergoing significant investment and growth.

In this role, you will own and improve optical thin film coating processes used in high volume production. You will work hands on in the manufacturing environment to stabilize performance, resolve process issues, and lead continuous improvement efforts that improve yield, throughput, and process capability. This role has meaningful technical impact and strong exposure to new equipment, technologies, and product introductions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support day to day manufacturing operations by troubleshooting process excursions, identifying root causes, and driving effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Own and sustain coating processes, using data and key performance metrics to improve stability, yield, throughput, and variation.
  • Apply and improve metrology and inspection methods to monitor process capability and identify trends before defects occur.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing cost, cycle time, complexity, and scrap, with clearly defined problems and verified results.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation (specifications, work instructions, control plans) and deliver training for new or changed processes.
  • Partner cross functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Metrology, Development Engineering, suppliers, and customers to support technology transfer, qualification, and issue resolution.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or Science discipline (e.g., Optical Science/Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering).
  • 3+ years of professional engineering experience in manufacturing, process engineering, or production support environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply structured problem solving and root cause analysis.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation and training.
  • Working knowledge of statistical methods (Six Sigma, DOE, SPC) and data driven troubleshooting.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across levels and functions in a manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5–10 years of professional process engineering experience in optical thin film coating or similar high precision manufacturing.
  • Experience improving process capability and control systems (SPC, Cp/Cpk).
  • Track record of delivering yield improvement, cycle time reduction, or rework elimination.
  • Experience with Lean, DMAIC, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
