Scope of Position

  • PO (Precision Optics) and LO (Laser Optics) Coating Development: Technical Lead in developing coating solutions for customers new semiconductor inspection and lithography systems.
  • Expertise and support to the broader AO coatings portfolio: provide insightful solutions to optical thin films challenges (environmental stability, laser durability, high optical performances) from the visible wavelength range to DUV, VUV, EUV.
  • Optical coating expertise in the DUV range to actively engage with technical and commercial team meetings for New Programs as Subject Matter Expert. Ability to provide concise and quick feedback to Program managers, and estimates of development needs/resources to deliver.
  • Active contribution to Corning's IP: publish Technical Reports and Invention Disclosures from new materials & processes developments or findings.
  • At the interface of Corporate Research, Division Engineering, Commercials and the Fairport plant, good interaction and communication with varying backgrounds is expected to carry clear and concise information within the organization.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Reporting to PO Coating Development Leadership, participate to all PO New Product Development and update local AO Coating Development team in weekly meetings. Active participation is expected, as well as tracking and delivering on the tasks that get defined.
  • Design optical films per project requirements and product specifications, reporting studies to project management. Generate models with coating design softwares to update Program management, delivering expected performance and operational path.
  • Review drawings of varying element types depicting film specifications, substrate geometries, beam profiles, angle of incidences, target wavelengths. 
  • Interact with immediate Research & Development scientists, optical designers, engineers, manufacturing experts and seek metrology / characterization support from corporate available assets.
  • Direct interaction with vacuum coating Technicians or Scientists to facilitate process development, coating operations including fixtures designs, measurements from a wide variety of metrology sources and provide guidance for process improvements.
  • Conduct research of public and internal sources for information regarding existing scientific areas of study.

Required Education and Experience

  • Must possess a Ph.D. in Physics, Material Science or Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, or equivalent), with at least 10 years of experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in Optical Coating materials and designs for Precision Optics, in complex systems from the visible wavelength range down to DUV/VUV, with a system-level approach that may include several lens elements, mirrors, beam splitters, filters. Typical substrate shapes range from flat, spherical, aspherical, concave or convex, to freeform
  • Be familiar with bulk and surface characterization and optical properties fundamental understanding
  • Experience in using Coating Design software (OptiLayer, FilmStar, TFCalc...)
  • Knowledge and strong experience with Optical Coating equipment (PVD PiAD, e-beam, Processes and Tooling optimization, physical thickness controls and optical monitoring systems)
  • Ellipsometry and related modeling software
  • Command of Microsoft Office Suite, Word, PowerPoint, Excel

Desired Experience

  • Semiconductor inspection and/or lithography environment work experience
  • Experienced at writing Technical Reports, Invention Disclosures or other R&D articles, conduct Design of Experiements, write Developmental Plans.
  • Experience in reading, understanding and sharing technical specifications, mechanical and optical drawings
  • R&D project management experience with a business focus, including budget, timing and specific deliverables / milestones. Project management software experience
  • Experience and knowledge in Thin Film laser lifetime, light-matter interactions and laser damage fundamental understanding. This includes failure mechanisms between substrate and film interfaces
  • Experience in other optical coating deposition platforms (IBS, ALD, Magnetron sputtering)
  • Knowledge of MS Excel analytical tools and complex functions

The range for this position is $139,499.00 - $191,812.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
