Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

 

The Systems Development Engineer is responsible for the development and launch of new and novel metrology tools for various highly technical applications. This will require the engineer to become an expert level user of the current interferometer products and have an intimate understanding of the hardware, software, and the ways that customers use the information generated by the tools. The Systems Development Engineer will drive innovation projects while working closely with the Metrology development team to conceptualize, prototype, test, and launch systems and make improvements to current products and technologies.

 

This role is highly collaborative, requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills while also applying structured problem solving and development methodologies.  The candidate is expected to document results by authoring internal/external reports and filing invention disclosures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use sound scientific and engineering principles to develop high performance opto-mechanical systems for a range of highly technical applications
  • Responsible for leading development projects as technical lead, owning development and engineering workstreams
  • Hands on prototyping, troubleshooting, and systems integration of complex opto-mechanical systems including software integration as needed to meet stringent precision and reliability requirements
  • Facilitate and contribute to design reviews, risk assessments (e.g. FMEA) and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Participate in a range of concurrent projects, working cross functionally with engineering, development, manufacturing, supply chain, and commercial functions
  • Communicate results to peers, management, and technology receivers in technical reports and through intellectual property generation and filings
  • Keep current with technological advances in optical metrology techniques and industry applications of metrology through literature, conferences, interfacing with industry experts, etc. to identify new application and market targets for product development

Required Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, optics, or physics required
    • Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Optical preferred, though other relevant experience will be considered
  • Minimum of 5+ years of applicable systems level development and integration experience
  • Demonstrated track record of managing multiple ongoing projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to solve challenging multidisciplinary problems (Optics / Mechanical / Electronics / Software / PC)
  • Experience translating complex customer requirements to a cohesive set of design specifications
  • Ability to collaborate across functions (manufacturing, engineering, supply chain, commercial)
  • Advanced mathematical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Problem solving focused mindset and strong ability to troubleshoot difficult technical problems
  • Experience with precision measurement systems and instrument gauge study methodologies
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Desired Experiences

  • M.S. in engineering, optics, or physics preferred
  • Experience developing and working with optical metrology methods and technologies such as interferometers highly desired
  • Experience working in semiconductor industry applications
  • Strong working understanding of GD&T
  • Experience with robotic systems and robotic control algorithms desired
  • Programming experience desirable (C# preferred, others beneficial including Matlab, Python, C++, etc.)
  • Experience with optical software analysis tools a plus (CODE V, FRED, etc.)
  • Application of Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical data analysis methods

The range for this position is $107,309.00 - $147,550.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
