Scope of Position
The position is in the Advanced Optics surface finishing and optical fabrication development group based in Rochester, NY. The individual will be working closely with the optical fabrication development group, division and plant engineering, supporting the business objective of developing novel optical fabrication and metrology technologies.
The role involves application of routine and non-routine fabrication of optical surfaces (lenses, mirrors, prisms etc...), assist with method development, manufacturing platforms set-up and operation, troubleshooting, organization of process log.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain CNC optical fabrication platforms and conventional polishing platforms.
- Interact with engineers to understand purpose and contribute to defining fabrication process flow.
- Write program recipes for optics fabrication. Generate sub-aperture solves on figuring platforms.
- Tailor instrument configuration to meet the optical fabrication needs.
- Maintain detailed records of operations and observations.
- Support efforts to develop new optical fabrication methods.
- Recognize and troubleshoot instrumentation issues.
- Perform periodic instrument calibration and daily maintenance.
- Assist engineers in building new manufacturing platforms or evaluate performance of commercially available fabrication equipment.
- Perform required metrology on test samples.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Has completed or is currently enrolled in a 2 year (AAS) technical degree from an accredited institution (optical, electronic, or computer sciences preferred) and/or a minimum 2 years of optical manufacturing and metrology industry experience.
- Ability to execute optical fabrication processes with attention to details, consistently, and thoroughly document what was done.
- Hands-on experience setting up and operating optical fabrication equipment.
- Experienced operating CNC grinding and polishing platforms
- Ability to diagnose equipment issues and make minor repairs.
- Basic use of CAD software.
- MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) proficiency.
- Good dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
- Comfortable with math and geometry.
- Ability to clean optics using solvent wipe methods.
- Ability to align optics on CNC-manufacturing platforms.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Hands-on experience building and aligning CNC equipment, and system troubleshooting.
- Experience with writing and reading G-code.
- Knowledgeable about sub-aperture polishing processes (ADAPT, Zeeko, MRF, IBF)
- Basic knowledge of interferometry and microscopy.

The range for this position is $63,761.00 - $87,672.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
