Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

The purpose of this position is:

  • Operate precision grinding equipment to sharpen and manufacture cutting tools to high quality finish blueprint specs.
  • Perform quality inspection of tooling throughout the manufacturing and sharpening process.

This position includes significant duties such as:

  • Receive tooling from the Storeroom and check the status of paperwork, priority level and tooling condition.
  • Check dimensions, angles and tooling condition etc.
  • Sharpen low complexity tooling to match blueprint specs without assistance using fixed gauges, micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, and surface gauges.
  • Perform basic set ups and operate all manual grinders as well as to silver solder blanks with the use of judgment.
  • Set up, align, and operate surface and cutter grinders, as well as any related equipment to perform low complexity tooling operations.
  • Make low complexity tooling from a tool blank as required without assistance.
  • Select proper wheel and work holding fixtures to use in the tool grinding process.
  • Complete tool grinding operations with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, precision measuring instruments, and trigonometry and geometry principles.
  • Complete all process paperwork and production log book at each machine after every grinding task is complete.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and daily machine maintenance on grinding equipment and clean machines daily.
  • Maintain work chucks and fixtures in a burr free condition.
  • Clean and re-supply operating materials. (i.e. oil, hoses, belts, changing coolant, and filters as needed).
  • Maintain safety and quality standards using acceptable house keeping practices on equipment and work area.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent light effort in a variety of duties throughout the grinding process.
  • Good working conditions.
  • Some exposure to elements of dust, noise, fumes, and heat, none disagreeable.

Education:

  • High School or General Education Diploma

  • 1 year experience
