The purpose of this position is:

  • Operate precision grinding equipment to sharpen and manufacture cutting tools to high quality finish blueprint specs.
  • Fabricate simple fixtures, tooling and general machining to assist and support various production departments by using hand tools, precision measuring tools and perform basic set-ups on machine shop equipment and precision metal cutting equipment.
  • Perform quality inspection of tooling throughout the manufacture and sharpening process.

 

This position includes significant duties such as:

  • Receive tooling from the Storeroom and check the status of paperwork, priority level, and tooling condition.
  • Check dimensions, angles, and tooling condition.
  • Sharpen basic tools to match blueprint specs with some assistance using fixed gauges, micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, and surface gauges and make low complexity tooling from a tool blank as required.
  • Select proper wheel and work holding fixtures to use in the tool production process.
  • Perform basic set-ups, align, and operate manual surface grinders, cutter grinders and O.D. grinders, as well as any related equipment to perform low complexity tooling operations.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and basic maintenance on grinding equipment.
  • Maintain work chucks and fixtures in a burr free condition.
  • Clean and re-supply operating materials (i.e. oil, hoses, belts, changing coolant, and filters as needed) and clean machines and work area on a daily basis.
  • Maintain safety and quality standards using acceptable housekeeping practices on equipment and work area.
  • The above description covers the most significant duties performed but does not exclude other occasional work assignments not mentioned.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent light lifting effort in a variety of duties throughout the grinding process.
  • Some exposure to elements of dirt, dust, odors, noise, and wetness.

 

Education:

  • Certified tooling machinist or completion of apprenticeship program - General education degree

 

Experience:

  • 6+ months of machining experience preferred.
