Purpose Statement:

Senior manufacturing manager role established to collaborate with Corning International (CI) and Market Access Platform (MAP) businesses operating in India to achieve specific business/Corning objectives for the region. The incumbent will work closely with the business in India and the MAP leaders to expand Corning’s manufacturing footprint in India. The purpose of the role evolves based on the maturity of Corning/MAP business in the country.

 

Early stage manufacturing strategy development (primarily project management)

Support manufacturing strategy development for new businesses in a region – collaborate with CI and the MAP business to execute the formal site selection process for either internal or contract manufacturing. 

Participate on the site selection team, negotiation, contracting services, etc. 

Support cost & delivery financial modeling and manufacturing constraint assumptions.  Ensure all facets of business operations are considered in decision making by applying local experience and knowledge. 

Enable clear understanding of legal & regulatory requirements that impact staffing, production, quality, service, etc. and leverage Corning subject matter experts to establish the manufacturing footprint in the region.

 

Mature stage manufacturing execution & performance (country manufacturing manager)

Support MAP business manufacturing sites to achieve country specific business manufacturing objectives. 

Deploy Corning Manufacturing System (CMS), performance excellence capabilities and additional Corning manufacturing programs. 

Support competency development through talent development programs and meet all safety, health, and environmental requirements.  

Establishing a manufacturing ecosystem for localization

Develop a plug and play ecosystem for various local manufacturing needs of the businesses in India.

The role reporting will tie into Corning international to support business development and Corning global manufacturing for manufacturing excellence knowledge, tools and processes.

 

Prinicipal Acoountabilities:

Early stage manufacturing strategy development (primarily project management)

  • Define manufacturing footprint in the region
  • Execute major capital projects supporting growth and expansion
  • Assure the success of expansion programs while considering cost, resources, and technical risk
  • Assure quality and quantity of talents meet operational requirement
  • Build a sustainable culture characteristic of Corning Values
  • Build effective relationships with Global Supply Management (GSM), Manufacturing Technology & Engineering (MTE), Science & Technology (S&T) and staff function
  • Be forward thinking in the development of strategies and plans that insure the sustainability of plant operations

 

Mature stage manufacturing execution & performance (country manufacturing manager)

  • Develop and implement manufacturing operating plans that meet key performance objectives
  • Assure the success of manufacturing and engineering programs while considering cost, resources, and technical risk
  • Assure growth in talent and capability of the plant staff and total organization
  • Build effective relationships within the business, corporate leadership, and staff groups, and with key customers and suppliers where required
  • Actively participate with division and business staffs in development of strategies supporting manufacturing and commercial objectives
  • Build a sustainable culture characteristic of Corning Values and continuous improvement in support of the business
  • Champion and sponsor the innovation process for new product and process development
  • Demonstrate positive corporate citizenship in the communities in which we operate
  • Be forward thinking in the development of strategies and plans that insure the sustainability of plant operations
  • Champion and sponsor key corporate initiatives
  • Coordinate on resource sharing and best practice sharing/implementation amongst the plants in the region

 

Establishing a manufacturing ecosystem for localization

  • Develop a plug and play ecosystem for various local manufacturing needs of the businesses in India.
  • Work closely with GSM to identify suitable vendors.
  • Establish a quality control function to support local manufacturing needs.
  • Develop and deploy training for good practices in manufacturing in line with Corning requirements.

  1. Context/Environment:
  • The incumbent will work in a competitive environment that requires understanding and application of techno-commercial knowledge to strengthen Corning India’s positioning in the corporation for consideration to expand manufacturing footprint. The incumbent will need to exercise a nuanced approach to manage a complex mix of internal and external customers with various needs and expectations in a global matrix structure. 

 

  1. Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:
  • Engineering degree at the graduate level; MBA will be preferred
  • Minimum 15 years of experience with global manufacturing and business through work, project experience, or expatriate assignment.
  • Progressive responsibilities in manufacturing and engineering roles in plants and divisions including Plant Manager experience.
  • Manufacturing and/or engineering experiences throughout the product life cycle (growth and/or decline, new product introductions, turnaround situation, etc.).
  • Experience in leading projects or organizations in meeting step change performance improvements, new product or process innovation, and expanding technical capability.
  • Experience developing and communicating plant manufacturing strategy and tactics.
  • Experience in multiple businesses, divisions, technologies.
  • Experience in staff or project roles such as Project Manager or Program Manager.
  • Green or brownfield experience; new manufacturing build, contract manufacturing etc.
  • Experience building and managing collaborative relationships across functional areas.
  • Demonstrated track record of growing and placing talent.
  • Comfort with technology and ability to work across different cultures and time zones.
  • Comfort around interacting with senior leaders in a global matrix environment will be preferred.
